So You Want To Be A Film Actor?

Exclusive Interview with Film Actor, Writer & Producer Damon Shalit

(Left to Right Director Gabriel Bologna and Actor Damon Shalit from African Gothic)

I managed to interview Actor Damon Shalit at the Durban International Film Festival and ask him some questions about Film Acting, Writing and Producing.  Here is what he had to say.

What does an actor do?

An actor serves the text, the actor serves the writer.

Tell us about African Gothic and your part?

In 2005 in LA I was performing in the stage play of 'Diepe Grond' the play on which the movie is based.   It was a long run and well received.  I thought this would make a great movie.  It was a long process to get options.  I made it happen.  We shot the film in Central California.  All actors in central roles are South Africans.

What advice do you have for writing a script?

The play is an incredible blueprint.  Cinema is images.  I asked myself how do I expand this play?
I feel we achieved this.  I had to write characters and bring characters to life.  You have to know what to trim.

Advice for would be actors?

Enjoy the journey.  It's about the journey.  Love the work.  It is such a fickle, unpredictable business.  If you fall in love with the work it does not matter where it leads.

Film or Theatre?

My first love has always been theatre.  Film is a different medium.
Stage from an actor viewpoint.  Film from a creative view.  Film acting is about simplicity and thoughts.  You don't see that in theatre.

What's next for you?

I have a few projects in the works.

How do you keep in shape?

Cross-Fit and Squash

5 Questions with Roberta Durandt Director & Producer of Felix

This week at the Durban International Film Festival I managed to sit down with
Roberta Durbandt the Director and Producer of the new South African film 'Felix.'

Roberta Durandt - Image Courtesy @DIFFest

I asked her some questions about the movie and about the film world:

Tell us about Felix?

It is a Billy Elliot type of movie.  It's a feel good family film.  It is also a fable.
It is about Felix's journey and man's journey.

It is set in a private school.  We cover topics such as being bullied, alcohol, jazz music.
Felix starts to learn the sax.  His mother has to come to terms with this as well.

You can also find out more about the movie here:  www.felixthemovie.com

When does the movie open in South African nationally?

It opens in 35 cinemas from 13 September so look out for it.

What does a director do?

Know what you are doing.  Know all aspects of the game.  Keep persisting.  Keep going.
Felix took me 5 years.  Keep going.

What's next for Roberta?

I am busy with a gameshow at the moment titled 'You Deserve it.'
It will launch on etv in september.  This gameshow is something different.
In this gameshow people play for someone else.

Scene from the movie - Courtesy @DIFFest

How did you find the actor who played Felix.

We auditioned 400 young actors. Vulnerability and a good performance made this actor stand out.
You know boys grow so quickly and it was just lovely to see him acting.

Felix is showing at the Durban International Film Festival.
Next show:  27 July 15:15 Sneddon

Tweet @felixmovie - https://twitter.com/felixmovie and tell them what you think of the movie.

Is This The Next Hollywood Star?

Onwards and Upwards

                                                                 Chella Ferrow

Interview with Chella Ferrow one of the main actors from African Gothic

This week at the Durban International Film Festival I managed to sit down with this actor and ask her some questions about the movie and about acting.

What was it like working on Franchise TV Series like Ugly Betty and Law & Order?

I take what I can.  It's great for the experience, amazing writing there, great shows.  I'm greatful for every opportunity I get.  It helps to be adaptable and chameleon like.  I love accents and nuances.

Why did you want to become an actress?

I love the magical playing.  There's something sacred about it.  There's always a freedom about it.
I was at a Johannesburg school and I knew I wanted to be an actress.  I did a degree in psychology and
moved to London.  It began there.

Tell us about African Gothic and your character?

I'm drawn to Reza's work.  The magic writing.  The rawness of it all.  She's stuck in a past.
There's a wisdom in her.   She is not just a child trapped in a woman.

What is your acting technique?

I've studied various ones.  You use parts that work for you and you use what works for you.
Listen.  Don't get stuck.  It comes from your body.  Do research and reading.

What do you personally do with a script?

I read it.
I then let it go.
Then I go back to it.
I walk around with it.
I talk.
I stew and things come to me.
I ask the director.
It needs to be physical for me.
Where does her voice sit with me.
In the chest?
In the throat?

Film or Theatre?

I love them both.
The expression in them is different.
Theatre is the sacred genre.
Film I love.
I want to do more of it.

What's next for you?

Auditions in LA.
I would love to do more work in South Africa.

Who's your agent?

Innovative Artists - http://www.innovativeartists.com/home.html
Station 3 Management

What's it like for a South African Actress based in the USA?

Don't try to lose your South Africanness.
Stay creative in your own right.

Tips for people who want to become actors?

Watch a lot of movies.  See lots of theatre.  Keep doing it.  Get into an acting class.
Don't stick with one teacher.  Know yourself.  It's a spirited journey for me.

What do you do to relax?

Read a lot, walk a lot around New York city.
New York is a walking city.

When I interviewed this young lady I got the feeling that there is just something about her.
She is certainly headed in one direction and that is up.

African Gothic is showing at the Durban International Film Festival.

Review of the Show Out Of Bounds starring Rajesh Gopie

We present a Review of the Show Out Of Bounds Starring Rajesh Gopie.

                                                 @OutOfBoundsSA

Last night I was invited to the show Out Of Bounds at the delightful iZulu Theatre at Sibaya
Casino.

What a delightful venue and I joined some great friends like Themi Venturas and James P Parker
and Illa Thompson to watch the show.

Rajesh Gopie the man who brought us The Coolie Odyssey is back with his one hander
Out Of Bounds.

He has performed it before and this is the first time I have seen it.

He takes you on a wonderful journey of a Indian family and how they move about Durban
from their homes to forced removals into flats and the wonderful characters they meet along
the way.

Rajesh is simply brilliant as he plays well over 20 characters some dark some light, some funny some
scary.

There are some wonderful scenes in it.  I shall not spoil it for you, you really have to go see it yourself.

A note for actors, if you want to learn how to play different characters take yourself off to the show
to see how a master actor does this.

Well worth a visit

Competitions, Theatre and Book Reviews in this issue

Even superheroes are trying to Beat the Bank!

This week two superheroes - or at least people who thought they would attempt to be - tried to break into the Beat the Bank vaults at East Coast Radio.

‘Superman’ and ‘Batman’ even went as far as abseiling down the side of the station’s building, on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, to see which vaults would be full of cash and which would trigger the alarm. As they learnt the hard way, the only way to actually get into the vaults is over the phone!

The best way to win in Beat the Bank is to listen out to East Coast Radio for the signal to call in. The lucky listener on line seven then has the chance to open as many bank vaults as they like and take all the cash in each one as they go. But they’d better be warned, some vaults trigger an alarm which will leave the player empty handed.

Beat the Bank Beat the Bank wraps up on 24 February, so make sure you tune in for the signal to call and play in the next two weeks!

Boesman & Lena is coming to the Catalina

Athol Fugard’s classic story of two coloured people trapped in a struggle for freedom and dignity set during apartheid South Africa, to be staged at the Catalina theatre, Wilsons Wharf for a season designed primarily as a study aid to high school learners, from the 27 February – 16 March 2012.

Directed by Daisy Spencer and starring Rory Booth and Caitlan Kilburn in the title roles, with Mthokozisi Zulu as "Outa", this production takes place in the course of a single evening, following Boesman and Lena’s story as they journey across the mudflats of the Swartkops River near Port Elizabeth, carrying all their belongings, as they have been uprooted from their home which has been bulldozed by the white authorities in order to drive them and other blacks and coloureds in the segregated settlement further away from their white neighbours.

Fugard described an encounter he had that influenced the creation of Boesman and Lena: on a hot August day in 1965, Fugard and two friends were driving along a rural road when they saw an old woman trudging along with all of her worldly possessions tied up in a bundle on her head. They stopped and offered her a ride. She cried at their unexpected kindness, and during the fifteen-mile trip to a farm up the road, she told them about the death of her husband three days earlier and her nine missing children. If Fugard and his companions hadn't stopped to offer her a ride, she would have followed her plan to sleep in a stormwater drain that night and continue her long journey the next day.

Boesman and Lena premiered in Grahamstown at the Rhodes University Little Theatre in 1969 with Fugard himself in the role of Boesman and Yvonne Bryceland as Lena. Glyn Day, a white actor, played the part of Outa in blackface. When the curtain rang down at the end of the play there was a moment of silence and then followed round after round of applause from the distinguished first-night audience. The cast took eight curtain calls.

Daisy Spencer says this about the current production: “If you have ever had the fortune of meeting a coloured person, I’m sure you will agree that we are a very special, amusing and interesting race. Yet as unique as we are, we are constantly conflicted by our lack of a sense of belonging. We metamorphosise into whomever we need to be to entertain the people we are surrounded by, which often leaves us unsure of who we really are. Yes, race is one of the themes Boesman and Lenahighlights, but far beyond this, Athol Fugard presents two people whose pain and suffering is as stark as their surroundings, made worse by man's cruelty to man - the secret pain we all inflict upon each other in our closest relationships. It is a struggle to find the strength it takes to break free from what holds one back from finding out who one really is, and more importantly, what one's value is”.
