So You Want To Be A Film Actor?
Exclusive Interview with Film Actor, Writer & Producer Damon Shalit
(Left to Right Director Gabriel Bologna and Actor Damon Shalit from African Gothic)
I managed to interview Actor Damon Shalit at the Durban International Film Festival and ask him some questions about Film Acting, Writing and Producing. Here is what he had to say.
What does an actor do?
An actor serves the text, the actor serves the writer.
Tell us about African Gothic and your part?
In 2005 in LA I was performing in the stage play of 'Diepe Grond' the play on which the movie is based. It was a long run and well received. I thought this would make a great movie. It was a long process to get options. I made it happen. We shot the film in Central California. All actors in central roles are South Africans.
What advice do you have for writing a script?
The play is an incredible blueprint. Cinema is images. I asked myself how do I expand this play?
I feel we achieved this. I had to write characters and bring characters to life. You have to know what to trim.
Advice for would be actors?
Enjoy the journey. It's about the journey. Love the work. It is such a fickle, unpredictable business. If you fall in love with the work it does not matter where it leads.
Film or Theatre?
My first love has always been theatre. Film is a different medium.
Stage from an actor viewpoint. Film from a creative view. Film acting is about simplicity and thoughts. You don't see that in theatre.
What's next for you?
I have a few projects in the works.
How do you keep in shape?
Cross-Fit and Squash
