Something new for Durban, The Durban Filmmakers Guild

Durban is probably the closest city to Los Angeles in weather, light intensity and locations. yet we lag behind the rest of SA in film production. Our talent has to migrate to excel. Film redefine a city and its culture. There is a need an organization that will develop, protect and promote the interests of Durban filmmakers.

Indie film producer and journalist, Massod Boomgaard says, "It is important that an organization is formed to trigger growth within our fledgling industry. Such an organization will see our talented film makers coming together, working together and supporting each other as we work towards the common goal of fulfilling the true potential of Durban as a film city.

Eubulus Timothy who is the Vice chair of the Writers Guild Of South Africa and the Founding chairperson of the Cape Film Commission believes that it is not too late to start in Durban. “We have the passion, creativity and locations to make Durban a great film city. We need the City and Province to support the industry in every way possible so that we can nurture a new and exciting film culture.

Former Deputy Mayor and Speaker of Ethekwini Municipality says, "Durban filmmakers need support to access funding, create distribution networks and help in promoting their products.”

Renowned producer director Junaid Ahmed said, “An organization like the Durban Filmmakers Guild can serve to unite filmmakers to speak with one voice on issues that impact on their art form. The Guild will also develop and enhance the profile and interests of all filmmakers in the city."

The Durban of Chamber Commerce and Industry will launch the Durban Filmmakers Guild on May 5, 2014 at 5:30, hosted by Ethekwini Municipality.

Ster-Kinekor Makes Waves In Durban

Soldierboy vs. Du Plessis to headline EFC AFRICA 33

Yesterday I attended the launch of the partnership between EFC Africa and Ster-Kinekor.
For the first time viewers will be able to watch EFC Africa live in Ster-Kinekor in HD.

Ster-Kinekor and EFC AFRICA’s explosive broadcast partnership shifted into high gear with an exclusive event hosted at Ster-Kinekor’s luxurious Cine Prestige cinema at Gateway in Durban.

Guests were treated to an in-depth demonstration of the next evolution in cinema sports broadcasting, and the announcement that Durban’s own Garreth ‘Soldierboy’ McLellan will headline Durban’s first EFC AFRICA event, scheduled for 30 August.

McLellan made an appearance in person and announced that he will be defending his middleweight belt against Pretoria’s Dricus ‘Stillnox’ du Plessis. McLellan was steaming at remarks Du Plessis made on social media yesterday, openly daring the champion to fight him.

McLellan knows quite a few martial arts and trains anywhere between 3 - 7 hours a day.  He also adds running and swimming to his workout regime.

Bradley Knowles, Ster-Kinekor’s General Manager: Marketing, took assembled guests through an in-depth demonstration detailing the cutting-edge, HD digital technology that Ster-Kinekor has installed in its cinemas throughout South Africa.

“Our aim is to immerse the viewer in the full EFC AFRICA experience,” said Knowles. “With our state of the art, live HD setup, we are able to give our viewers a ringside viewing experience that places them right in the Hexagon action. Our investment in the technology, together with the surround sound and mood lighting, ensure that cinema audiences enjoy a larger-than-life, front row seat on our big screens.

“Following on the success of our first live broadcast of EFC AFRICA 28 into just four of our cinemas, we have extended this number to twelve cinemas for the next event on 01 May. EFC fans around the country now have the opportunity to watch their favourite athletes at cinemas in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein and Cape Town,” commented Knowles.

Ster-Kinekor’s sports viewing evolution has been made possible due to the recent digital conversion in each of its cinemas. Substantial investment in the highest quality, live satellite broadcast equipment and a continuously tested and monitored signal ensures a stable live broadcast of all the fight action, in crystal clear high definition.

After the in-cinema demonstration, guests were treated to an open workout by Durban’s rising star Peter Nyide. He will be facing Johannesburg fan favourite, Gareth Buirski, at the top of the prelim card at EFC AFRICA 29, next Thursday night. Durban fans will be able to catch Nyide’s bout, as well as fellow Durbanites Tyson Chelin and Saxon Delafield, live and larger than life on the big screen at the Ster-Kinekor Gateway cinema complex.

"Our partnership with Ster-Kinekor is incredibly exciting,” said EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth. "That we’re now reaching fans in places we’ve never been seen before, such as Soweto and Bloemfontein, with such a high quality, big screen experience, is a huge plus. Ster-Kinekor is leading the way with HD broadcast technology, and we're looking forward to new additions to our partnership, coming soon."

The following Ster-Kinekor HD cinemas will be online across South Africa for
EFC AFRICA 29 on Thursday, May 01:

Tips from Darren Maule on how to prepare for the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk

We received some tips today from Darren Maule on how to prepare for the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk.

They sound legit.

1.  Don't enter the Big Walk if you don't know how to walk!  If you are not sure about this - get up off your chair, move one foot in front of the other and if your body follows - you are walking! Congratulations! NOW you can enter the Big Walk.

2.  If you are a relatively new Big Walker, perhaps consider putting on two pairs of socks.  They will rub on each other and not on your uninitiated footsies.

Um, I think we will rather share with you some expert advice:

  • Talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness programme
  • Plan and track your training programme
  • Make sure you add stretching to your training routine
  • Make sure you get the right gear!  Invest in quality footwear for training and the walk, make sure they fit well.  Wear them in before the big day to avoid blisters.
More tips and advice on www.ecr.co.za and www.discovery.co.za

The Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk is on 18 May 2014.
Enter online at www.ecr.co.za or at selected Totalsports outlets.

A Handful of Keys is sheer good fun

Keith Millar: WOW! Now that’s entertainment!
Ian von Memerty and Roelof Colyn are simply superb in A Handful of Keys currently on at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, with over 1,180 performances and having been seen by more than 375,000 people A Handful of Keys is one of the most popular, and enduring, South African musical productions of all time.
There are tributes to lady singer/pianists such as Norah Jones, Alicia Keys and Nina Simone, and men such as Fats Domino, Fats Waller and Billy Joel. South African music is not ignored with a wonderful parody performance of The Click Song, Pata Pata and Mama Tembu’s wedding. An extraordinary item in the programme is The History of Broadway Musical where no less than 143 segments of Broadway musical songs are played and sung in 12 minutes. A virtuoso piano performance.
A Handful of Keys runs until April 27 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre with shows from Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 and with extra shows on Saturday and Sunday at 15h00. Tickets R150 booked through Computicket.

East Coast Radio scoops two awards at the 2014 MTN Radio Awards

East Coast Radio has more reasons to celebrate after bagging two awards at the prestigious MTN Radio Awards at the Sandton Convention Centre (12 April 2014).

(Winners Jason McCall and Damon Beard - Image Supplied)

The Drive with Damon team return home armed with the Best Promotions/Stunt Award for Freebie Thursday – the second consecutive year that East Coast Radio has won the award. Presenter Damon Beard and his former producer Jason McCall could barely contain their excitement as they ran up on stage to be recognised amongst the cream of the broadcasting industry’s crop.

“We are so chuffed,” beamed Damon. “The competition was extra tough this year so win the award is huge for us and we’re super-proud!”

McCall added, “It’s an honour to win an award for something I love doing so much. I am humbled and too stoked!”

Freebie Thursday saw the Drive with Damon team using East Coast Radio’s multi-media platforms to create a buzz and recognise listeners, turning an ordinary Thursday into an extraordinary listener-experience.

While Damon is a seasoned East Coast Radio personality, up and coming behind-the-scenes producer, Salendran Thulukanam, was one of six young individuals honoured for their talent, for making their mark and for showing promise for the future of radio. Salendran is the proud recipient of the MTN Bright Stars Award, saying he is “humbled by the recognition.”

East Coast Radio’s Programming Manager, Zane Derbyshire, says, “Our impressive 13 nominations this year  together with our wins is testament to the innovative way that we program the station and these wins are a true recognition of the talented people on our team!”

But the station’s accolades didn’t end there. East Coast Radio presenter Zaba, dazzled as co-host of the 2014 MTN Radio Awards, alongside veteran Alex Jay. Zaba looked resplendent in her designer gear and did KZN proud!
Speaking of honour,  Omar Essack, the CEO of Broadcasting at Kagiso Media (East Coast Radio’s parent body) was honoured in the Hall of Fame.

The MTN Radio Awards recognise excellence in radio across South Africa. It’s about rewarding those individuals and organisations who combine talent, hard work and skill to ensure that their listeners are compelled.

The latest awards add to East Coast Radio existing tally for MTN Radio Awards. The station won Best Commercial Promotions Stunt in 2013, Best Community Project for Toy Story in 2012 and Best Content Producer in 2011. ECR also received the Station of the Year nomination in 2013.

Launch of the Awesome iLembe Arts Festival
The first Awesome iLembe Arts Festival will take place across the iLembe region on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal from 8 to 10 August 2014. An innovative and far sighted initiative by the Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with producers Awesome Africa Festival Productions, this multi-cultural event in celebration of 20 years of freedom and democracy will take the music to the people – and directly into the communities themselves at venues in Mandeni, Ndwedwe, Maphumulo and KwaDukuza.
The Festival will feature around 40 local, national and international artists in the disciplines of music, theatre, dance, poetry, storytelling and arts and crafts, with the main focus falling on music this year. Audiences will be enthralled by contributions from various music genres and themes including jazz, gospel, pop, rock, pan-african, maskandi, isicathamiya, hip hop, Indian traditional, Bollywood, and various “world music” styles. The Festival will also include the “Funk it Up” DJ Experience, as well as a focus on South African legends and a Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.
The Festival will be launched in style on the 27th March at the Sibusisiwe Community Centre in Mandeni, with the example of “taking the music to the people in the communities”, being taken quite literally with a unique “concert of a lifetime” by US Jazz legend Kirk Whalum, who will bring his much celebrated series “The Gospel According to Jazz” to Africa for the very first time.
For further information on the Festival, or for anyone in the ILembe region who would like to be involved, please visit the web sitewww.awesomeilembe.co m or call Gabi Nkabinde on 084 357 8860.
