Interview with Film Director Angus Gibson

Film Director Angus Gibson was in Durban recently for the Durban International Festival to promote the movie ‘Back of the Moon’.

Film Director Angus Gibson

He is also one of the people behind hit shows such as ‘Yizo Yizo’ and ‘Isibaya’.
I asked him some questions about filmmaking. This is what he had to say:

What does a director do?

A director interprets a script, overseeing the performances, the camerawork, the sound, the edit of the film – constantly making choices which guide the spirit and the aesthetic of the film. A director is a leader on the film set and a storyteller.

Tell us about 'Back of the Moon'?

Back of the Moon takes place in 1958 in Sophiatown, the night before the residents of one of the streets will be forcibly removed and taken to Meadowlands way out of the city. The central character Max aka Badman is an intellectual and might have been a liberation leader, but instead he has become the leader of a gang and he is disappointed in himself. On this night that he has decided that he will fight an impossible fight against being removed from his house – Eve Msomi, a Miriam Makeba kind of figure that he has loved from afar, lands in his orbit and they spend magical hours together. It is the beginning of a beautiful relationship, but his gang has turned against him.

What advice do you have for young directors?

Be original. Find a way to show your talent – be it in writing, in music videos or short films – even if you do not have access to high end equipment, use your cell phone. Do research in the creation of the characters and the world you are describing. Your
own life experience is a useful resource. Above all you need to hustle and not give up. There are many people wanting to get the opportunity to direct and if you get the opportunity, give it your all.

Advice on how to get distribution deals?

I am no expert in this field but film markets and festivals are good places in which to get deals, before and after production. Again one needs to hustle to get the proposal or the finished film seen by the right people.

Why do you think 'Yizo Yizo' blew up like it did and became so successful?

At the time that it was made there had been no accurate representation of a township culture. In Yizo Yizo urban black South Africans felt that they recognized themselves on screen for the first time. Again it was based on a whole year of research in the township schools. There were characters and situations that people related to and fell in love with.

Advice for Producers pitching shows to TV networks?

At the moment TV networks seem to be in search of a hook right up front that will attract and draw an audience in. You need to be very aware of the audience that you are speaking to. You need to create a set of characters and describe a world that they will
relate to and will sustain strong drama. Again if you have a brave broadcaster, original ideas feel key. At the time that we pitched Isibaya, a rural, traditional world had not been depicted on screen for a long time. It felt fresh and different.

The film 'Back of the Moon' won the Best South African Feature Film award at the 40th Durban International Film Festival.

Back of the Moon opens at cinemas countrywide on Friday, 6th September 2019.

5 Questions with Roberta Durandt Director & Producer of Felix

This week at the Durban International Film Festival I managed to sit down with
Roberta Durbandt the Director and Producer of the new South African film 'Felix.'

I asked her some questions about the movie and about the film world:

Tell us about Felix?

It is a Billy Elliot type of movie.  It's a feel good family film.  It is also a fable.
It is about Felix's journey and man's journey.

It is set in a private school.  We cover topics such as being bullied, alcohol, jazz music.
Felix starts to learn the sax.  His mother has to come to terms with this as well.

You can also find out more about the movie here:  www.felixthemovie.com

When does the movie open in South African nationally?

It opens in 35 cinemas from 13 September so look out for it.

What does a director do?

Know what you are doing.  Know all aspects of the game.  Keep persisting.  Keep going.
Felix took me 5 years.  Keep going.

What's next for Roberta?

I am busy with a gameshow at the moment titled 'You Deserve it.'
It will launch on etv in september.  This gameshow is something different.
In this gameshow people play for someone else.

How did you find the actor who played Felix.

We auditioned 400 young actors. Vulnerability and a good performance made this actor stand out.
You know boys grow so quickly and it was just lovely to see him acting.

Felix is showing at the Durban International Film Festival.
Next show:  27 July 15:15 Sneddon

Tweet @felixmovie - https://twitter.com/felixmovie and tell them what you think of the movie.

Review of the Show Out Of Bounds starring Rajesh Gopie

We present a Review of the Show Out Of Bounds Starring Rajesh Gopie.

                                                 @OutOfBoundsSA

Last night I was invited to the show Out Of Bounds at the delightful iZulu Theatre at Sibaya
Casino.

What a delightful venue and I joined some great friends like Themi Venturas and James P Parker
and Illa Thompson to watch the show.

Rajesh Gopie the man who brought us The Coolie Odyssey is back with his one hander
Out Of Bounds.

He has performed it before and this is the first time I have seen it.

He takes you on a wonderful journey of a Indian family and how they move about Durban
from their homes to forced removals into flats and the wonderful characters they meet along
the way.

Rajesh is simply brilliant as he plays well over 20 characters some dark some light, some funny some
scary.

There are some wonderful scenes in it.  I shall not spoil it for you, you really have to go see it yourself.

A note for actors, if you want to learn how to play different characters take yourself off to the show
to see how a master actor does this.

Well worth a visit

In this issue - Director and Producer needed for a production and a writing competition

Greetings dear readers.

Pansa Kzn is looking for a proposal for a Director and new Production.

Call for proposals for Director and Production
For the RAINBOW Young performers project 2012

PANSA (KZN) is calling for proposals for Director and Production of the 2012 RAINBOW Young Performers Project. We are calling for production ideas and a director. The selection of both production and director will be made based on the following criteria (Please read them carefully as failure to comply will result in immediate disqualification):

PRODUCTION:

  1. It should be a production suitable to be played by a predominantly high school cast. This means that there should be enough good roles for young people to be able to extend themselves both musically and dramatically.
  2. The rights for the production should be available
  3. The production should have some commercial potential
  4. The production should have some theatrical value in the context of theatre in SA
  5. The production should be able to be produced to the highest possible standard within a very tight budget.

DIRECTOR:

1.      The Director should have a proven professional track record at the highest level
2.      The Director should have proven experience in working with young people at the highest level
3.      The Director should be fully available for the rehearsal period which will last for at least 3 months over consecutive weekends, and a few weeks in the holidays.
4.      The Director should have a proven track record in Production management, including managing the Set Design, Costume design, Lighting design and Musical Direction.
5.      The Director should be cognizant that the fees for directing are in keeping with a charity event, which in the case of this project is approximately a third of the going rate for musical theatre

A one page proposal, motivation and CV should be sent to Kovilen Moodley, PANSA (KZN) co-ordinator by email kovilen@pansa.org.za  by close of business on Tues 31 Jan, 2012.
