Call for MUSHO 2014 proposals

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!!!!

The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) in KZN will host the ninth Musho! International Theatre Festival of one and two person theatre, in Durban from January 2014, celebrating the art of the one and two-performer plays.

'Musho’ - isiZulu for an enthusiastic praise response, something similar to 'Bravo!' - embraces many forms of theatre: from mime to physical theatre, drama to comedy-theatre.  It pays tribute to the smaller works featuring one and two performers.  These are intimate productions that showcase the skill of theatre performance and storytelling, as well as covering a wide range of styles, from drama to comedy and physical theatre.

After extensive research, PANSA realized that a festival early in the year staging more intimate theatrical productions is considered a useful and exciting start to the year by performers and audiences alike.  Musho! benefits the performers as staging their shows and collecting reviews early in the year helps them for future seasons of the production through the year.  The audiences love seeing an array of fabulous theatre early in the year when calendars are quiet and when the festive flurry is over.

The festival is organised by PANSA KZN, the Performing Arts Network of South Africa. If you have a play or theatre piece that will be suitable for our festival feel free to send in your proposal to kzn@pansa.org.za
All proposals are read by a selection committee of local theatre professionals, and successful applicants will be contacted in October 2013.


Selection criteria for the festival include:

• The work must have one or two persons only performing
• The work should be an innovative and interesting concept
• The work should have potential appeal for local audiences
• The work should be classifiable as theatre (with a discernable narrative)
• The company or individual should have a good track-record and reputation
• The work should not have played in Durban in the past 12 months
• The work should be 50-70 minutes in length


Participants are paid for their participation in the festival.  The amount paid per performance will be confirmed at a later date, and is subject to the funding that PANSA receives.

Contracts will be drawn up between the artists and the festival once selection and confirmation procedures have been concluded, in October 2013.

Master Class for Script Writers 

Twist Theatre Development Projects, in partnership with the National Arts Festival and PANSA, will be hosting the annual Novel-Script Project, a master-class for script writers, in Grahamstown from 22 to 28 June. 

This project brings together writers from South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands in an intensive 5 day workshop that focuses on writers honing their craft.
 
Participants are provided with travel, accommodation, a per deum, and an invaluable experience.
We will be selecting just two South African writers to be part of the project for 2013.

This is a professional programme, and writers must be mid-career, and meet the following criteria:

•Fluency in writing and conversing in English, 
•Experience with having staged at least 2 of their own original scripts on the professional stage,

•Computer literacy, and own lap-top for the duration of the project,
•Openness to constructive criticism and workshop processes,
•Full availability over the period 22-28 June,
•The project does involve some preparation, and participants must be willing to complete an assignment in May. 

Applicants should email an application to info@twistprojects.co.za by Monday 22 April. 
Applications MUST include the following:

1) A short Curriculum Vitae containing the following:

With a new Kwa-Zulu Natal representative on the ground and an increased focus on the relevance, advancement and sustainability of the arts in the region, the upcoming Business Arts SA - BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, are not to be missed by arts practitioners.

The first Durban series of workshops in the 2013 BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, take place on April 11th at the KZNSA Gallery in Bulwer Road, Glenwood and are free to pre-registered participants.

Businesses will also be able to take part in the focused activities on April 11th by attending a business breakfast also at the KZNSA Gallery.

The business breakfast will include national and regional Business and Arts South Africa representatives and will give insight into a number of initiatives aimed at business. These include the first-of-its-kind BASA Arts Sponsorship Management Toolkit, which gives South African businesses a tool to navigating the sponsorship cycle and, ultimately, the ability to measure the effectiveness of arts sponsorship as a strategic part of any business.

The Durban workshops are also a chance for businesses and arts practitioners to connect with newly appointed Business and Arts South Africa representative in the region - Sharlene Versfeld of Versfeld & Associates.

Versfeld has been involved professionally in the South African arts sector since 1987 and has a long-standing reputation for her extensive work as an arts marketer most notably with the various festivals hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  In 2012 Versfeld undertook research for the British Council, with Nicolette du Plessis of Cultural Radius, on the South African arts landscape in relation to international agencies and collaborations. She is additionally a Board member of the Flatfoot Dance Company and does pro bono marketing for Action in Autism in KwaZulu-Natal.

“This is a challenging chapter in the arts industry in South Africa,” Versfeld says of her new tenure.

“Tough as it may be, we truly believe that businesses are looking for new and innovative ways to leverage their brands, whether from a sponsorship point of view or from a meaningful corporate social responsibility perspective.

“The research that BASA has done, the relationships developed with business and the inroads made into professionalising the arts industry provides a solid foundation for the further development of arts and business relationships, and we look forward to being part of a motivated and skilled team to help facilitate this in KZN.”

The Durban BASA Education Programme workshops, supported by Etana Insurance, are divided into three sessions and will cover social media, publicity basics (as part of the Back To Basics programme) and fundraising.

Call for proposals for Director and Production
                  for the RAINBOW Young Performer’s
                  Musical Theatre Project 2013

PANSA (KZN) is calling for proposals for Director and Production of the 2013 RAINBOW Young Performers Project.
We are calling for production ideas and a director.  The selection of both production and director will be made based on the following criteria (Please read them carefully as failure to comply will result in immediate disqualification):

1. PRODUCTION:
   a. It should be a production suitable to be played by a predominantly high school cast.  This means that there should be enough good roles    for young people to be able to extend themselves both musically and dramatically.
   b. The rights for the production should be available.
   c. The production should have some commercial potential.
   d. The production should have some theatrical value in the context of theatre in South Africa.
   e. The production should be able to be produced to the highest possible standard within a very tight budget.

2. DIRECTOR:
   a. The Director should have a proven professional track record at the highest level.
   b. The Director should have proven experience in working with young people at the highest level.
   c. The Director should be fully available for the rehearsal period, which will last for at least three (3) months over consecutive weekends, and    a few weeks in the holidays.
   d. The Director should have a proven track record in Production Management, including managing the Set Design, Costume Design, Lighting    Design and Musical Direction.
   e. The Director should be cognoscente that the fees for directing are in keeping with a charity event, which in the case of this project is    approximately a third of the going rate for Musical Theatre.

Please note: the Director should be based in Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Any proposals from out of the province will not be considered.

The Musho Theatre Festival is almost here and along with it there will be a free Puppet Master Class

Contributions needed for SA Dance Book & Auditions Coming Up

Dear Readers

Quite a bit happening around Durban.

For starters Pansa is calling for contributions for a new South African Dance Book:

PANSA is pleased to announce that it will be producing a coffee table book of South African dance. With this in mind, we are making a call for contributions of both text and photos. Your voluntary contributions to this historic venture will be greatly appreciated, and acknowledged in the book.

So, if you have any of the following, please send it in because we would like an opportunity to consider it for inclusion in the book. Content we are looking for includes, but is not limited to:

• written contributions, in the form of history of dance organisations, anecdotes of leading personalities, brief biographies of important and ground-breaking dance practitioners, reviews of major productions, or any similar written content,
• High-resolution digital images of dancers, choreographers, or dance productions,
• insights into the history of contemporary dance in SA, important milestones and personalities, or any other content that you think might be relevant.

All photographs, paragraphs and contributions of another nature will be acknowledged in the book. So pull out your photographs, old or new, of personal and professional dance and dancers for possible inclusion in this historic publication. While we cannot guarantee that every photograph or line of text will be included, all contributions will be treated with honour and accorded the care and attention they deserve.

1. West Side Story audition in Durban
The Playhouse Company, Durban, by arrangement with DALRO, announces auditions for the production of West Side Story in Durban during November and December 2013.

Please note the following criteria:
1. The production calls for classically trained dancers, singers and actors.
2. Previous professional experience in musical theatre is essential
3. Ladies need to bring high heel dance shoes and MUST be able to dance in these
4. Proficiency in different accents is an advantage.
5. Please bring a headshot and full length photograph, as well as a resume to your audition.
6. ALL artists to arrive by 8:30am to register and to be available ALL day. The dance audition starts at 9am. Singing and acting auditions to follow from this.

2. Casting Call
Bubblegum is a TV production company based in Greenpoint, Cape Town, currently recording a new children's storytelling TV series. The show is English language, and aimed at ages 3 to 6.

We are searching for a voice actor to be the narrator for this series - Black, male, ideally with a "cool uncle" voice.

4. Chief Executive Officer: JOBURG CITY THEATRES
The City of Johannesburg, as part of its Institutional Review, resolved that Joburg Theatre (SOC) Ltd and Roodepoort City Theatre NPC t/a Joburg Promusica be integrated into a single theatre management company to be known as Joburg City Theatres. This new Municipal Entity of the City of Johannesburg will render the functions and services that, until now, have been rendered separately by these two theatres. It will also institutionalise the operation of the newly established Soweto Theatre. Therefore, the Chief Executive Officer of Joburg City Theatres will be responsible for the operations of Joburg Theatre (formerly the Johannesburg Civic Theatre), Roodepoort City Theatre and Soweto Theatre.

The Head Office of Joburg City Theatres will be based at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.
