The 2014 Drama for Life Sex Actually Festival engages a multi-dimensional approach to the thematic focus: human connection.

This year’s theme aims to interrogate and explore the questions of; what makes us human? How do we relate to each other? What do we learn about ourselves as individuals as well as through our relationships? What boundaries/borders are we aware/unaware of? How, and to what extent, do we celebrate and fully engage all facets of our humanness? What levels and modes of connection amount to intimacy and sensuality? What are our understandings of safety and health in the intimate spaces? How has history and space affected our practice of human connection?

2014 ACT Scholarship Awards open for registration

A new set of matriculants can start preparing to be put through their paces, and make their dream of becoming a performing artist a reality.

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), in partnership with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO) and Nedbank Arts Affinity, is pleased to once again offer three Performing Arts Scholarships for local aspirant performers.

The ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Performing Arts Scholarships Programme is aimed at Grade 12 learners and individuals younger than 25 years of age who are neither registered for an undergraduate degree nor considered to be a professional performing artist. The programme takes the form of a competition where participants are assessed on their acting, dancing and singing potential and culminates in a final showcase before an independent panel comprising judges the likes of popular artist HHP, producers Hazel Feldman and Richard Loring, television personality Rozanne McKenzie and internationally acclaimed choreographer Gregory Maqoma, that auditioned the final round in the past.

In order to open this opportunity for as many aspirants as possible, this year’s audition circuit will include Nelspruit in addition to their usual stops in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein. 

Auditions will take place in June and July.

Since the inception of the programme in 2009, nine scholarships to the value of more than R900,000 have been awarded. Steve Norman won the inaugural Scholarship and went on to study Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Zola Myeza (2010 winner) from KwaZulu-Natal also attended UCT, and is finding her professional feet thanks to support from her agent, sponsor Talent etc. In 2011 two Scholarships were awarded – Nomagugu Gumede from KwaZulu-Natal enrolled at Howard College; and Tankiso Mamabolo from the Eastern Cape is studying Theatre and Performance at UCT.

Three scholarships will be awarded in 2014, to the values of R150,000; R105,000 and R60,000; totalling R315,000. The winners will be announced after the Final, hosted by UJ Arts & Culture at the University of Johannesburg on 13 October 2014. Scholarship recipients will be at liberty to select their preferred performing arts course at any accredited South African tertiary institution.

Surf Carnival Time

This annual event, now in its 12th year is growing from strength to strength with surfers from all around the country gearing up to participate within the various categories as well an increase in support from the crowds year on year!
The Stand up paddle event will once again be the SUPSA sanctioned South African Championships which will enjoy an unprecedented third year in Durban and the Surf Carnival organisers are pleased to host this premier SUP wave riding event again.

This year will also include SUP Course Racing which is a new discipline to the event and will see South Africa’s top SUP paddlers racing along the Backline of the Golden Mile.

The Forgotten Soul Retro surfing competition is also on the line-up again, exposing the history of South African surfing with surfers riding surfboards manufactured in the 70’s and 80’s as well as longboarding - going back to the “roots” of Surfing.

“Holding the SA Champs in Durban for the third year running is a huge bonus for the event which has religiously and faithfully included SUP surfing since 2007 and even before an SUP association even existed. New Pier as a venue is also a massive draw card for SUPers countrywide and once again we will be expecting a huge contingent from Cape Town,” says Paul Godwin from Nerve Events

The Longboarding event will once again see South Africa’s Style masters in action in various divisions.

This event is sanctioned by Stand Up Paddleboard Association of South Africa (SUPSA) and KwaZulu Natal Longboard Surfing Association (KZNLSA)

There will also be a free surfing clinic hosted by Learn to Surf - Surf School and a free SNAP SHOT Photographic Competition - both of these events are open to the general public to participate.
The surf carnival, which is free to the public, will showcase a number of exciting events from the SUPSA SA Stand up Paddle Surfing Champs; Naish SUPSA Racing; Forgotten Soul Retro Surfing; KZNLSA Longboard Surfing Competition; to the Free SNAP SHOT Photographic Competition and free Surfing clinic, so don’t miss out!

KwaMuhle Museum will serve as the Nerve Centre for Boma activations. Key elements include The Frameside Lounge, Open House Durban Photo & Sketch Wall Exhibition, and Caravan of Words where writers will craft stories on ‘Durban and Democracy’. The KidZone will feature Life Size Scrabble, storytelling and character role-plays from African folktales. Food Wagons will serve traditional local foods - bunny chow, samp and beans, and local beverages such as Frankie’s Ginger Beer from the Midlands. Open House Durban

An artetexture showcase of 20 Durban structures through the photographic lens and the sketch block – to promote the idea of creative economy. A competition will be launched to encourage UIA 2014 delegates and the public to take photos or make sketches of the selected buildings. Entries will be displayed in an Open House Durban Photo & Sketch Wall Exhibition at the Book & Design Boma. Winners will be announced at a prize ceremony during UIA 2014.

Mobile Pop-Up Book Bench with Deaf Pavement Poets

‘Parks 4 Read’ is an ongoing initiative that is held in a park setting. BunnyKats, leprechauns, and Irish rag doll Bridie Beag exchange integrated tales to encourage a love for reading and drawing. This is achieved with the assistance of local writers and artists interacting with the public and sketching BunnyKats reading miniature classics on the BooK Bench. Hearing and Deaf Pavement Poets will write and perform poetry on 20 years of democracy in South Africa and what it means to them.

This is another KickstArt Production and it shows.  All KickstArt Shows have a high level of professionalism about them and this show is full of professionals.  Packed full of the best talent that Durban has to offer.  You are seeing the best of the best.  If you don't know the tale by now this is the story of Jack (Rory Booth) who sells his family cow to two scoundrels Claude and Cecil (Scene-stealers both Peter Court and Bryan Hiles) in return for some magic beans.  The beans land up in the field and so grows a huge beanstalk which leads to the realm of the Giant (Lyle Buxton) who reminds me of someone.  Anyway there is a hen that lays magic eggs and a harp made of gold.
Prepare yourself for a wonderful pantomine, there is great interaction with the audience.  Look out for Lady Perfidia Beastly (Liesl Coppin) and Rory Booth.  Darren King is superb as Jack's Mom, loved the outfits.  Shelley Mclean is wonderful as the good fairy.

Look out for some animated sets it almost feels like you are in a comic book.  There is much work backstage as well and the crew is to be commended.

There is lots of audience interaction and some superb singing and dancing.  This show received a standing ovation at the performance I was at and you can see why.

The perfect outing for the family at this time of year.

The Playhouse Company will hold auditions on 19 February 2013 from 10 am, for the production entitled "Si Right!" to be staged as part of The Playhouse Company Schools Programme.

Si Right! is about a teenage boy, Thuso, and his younger sister, Thandeka, who set out from their village on a quest to seek understanding.  It is a production with song and dance aimed at senior primary learners, with a strong focus on instilling positive behaviour in kids and inspiring them to make the right choices in life.

Aspirant performers should be of a professional standard, well experienced and must be able to act, sing and dance as well as have a good command of isiZulu and English.  All performers should be able to play variety characters.

The script is written by Gisele Turner and Mthandazo Mofokeng and will be directed by Zeph Nzama.

CHARACTER BRIEF: 

• Thuso: 15 year old boy (brother) - He is fit, slender and good looking.  He has a good nature and understands his responsibilities.
• Thandeka: 13 year old girl (sister) - She is a well-brought up girl, slender, attractive, with strong long legs and pretty features.

ALL THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS ARE PLAYED BY THE OTHER TWO PERFORMERS 
• Nkosi: The Chief of the Village - He is the Old Man of the Village, the authority. 
• Ma: The Wise Woman of the Village - She is the Old Woman of the Village, the Matriarch.    
• Maatla: The King’s Bodyguard - Strong, lithe, intelligent, kind and authoritative.   
• Mandla: The King’s Bodyguard - Strong, lithe, intelligent, kind and authoritative.   
• The King: body puppet 
• Eye: Giant Mask - Bouncy, Jamaican rhythm, reggae rhymer.  
• Ear: Giant Mask - American style rapper with isiZulu rapid-fire commentary. 
• Nose: Giant Mask - A Comedian with a little stand-up routine.   
• Tongue: Giant Mask - A movement piece with lots of sound effects. 
• Touch:  Two Giant Hands A rolling rhyming poem with lots of Hand Gestures.    
• Master-Mind: a gangster - Brash, shameless, manipulative, conniving, expansive, takes pleasure in seeing people fall prey to his Games.   
• Side-Kick: his sidekick - the Small Voice of Conscience: kind, forgiving, sensitive, caring and supportive; but frustrated as no one tykes his advice   
• The Guy: A charmer, who is quickly aroused, has no conscience and takes what he wants. 
• The Mugger: A strong, quick criminal who has lots of experience in the crime field.

ARTISTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
Acting Audition: Prepare a short storytelling piece of not more than 2 minutes.
Musical Audition: Prepare one song/rap piece.

Si Right! will perform at various schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal on the Playhouse mobile stage during July & August 2013. 

Auditions will take place at The Playhouse Company - Room A1 on the 19th of February 2013.

Valentine's Day Events 

Frenchly Green ValentinesAlliance Française and Green Heart City present a romantic evening of French cinema, cuisine, live painting and music at Valentine’s.

The event kicks off at 6.30pm on Thursday 14 February with French love songs by Natalie Winter accompanied by Nicolas Creach on guitar. 

A definite treat is live painting by well-known artist Steve Mandy. Guests are invited to watch him paint green hearts with French flair onto a dress sported by a model. Mandy’s live painting is a popular feature at various fashion weeks in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

A Deaf culture demo by Green Hearts will have guests making their partners swoon with ‘Will you be my Valentine?’ in sign language. 

Teenage artists Kianja and Arianna will grace the festivities with timeless tunes from ‘Autumn Leaves’. Arianna’s virtuoso guitar playing and Kianja’s arresting lead vocals have received outstanding revues.  Their brand of natural talent and charm merged with a special ‘je ne sais quoi’ is simply captivating. 

The Alliance Française lawn provides the ideal backdrop for Valentine’s open-air cinema starting 7.30pm. ‘Donkey Skin’ (French with English subtitles) by Jacques Demy is based on a fairy tale by Charles Perrault (of Cinderella fame). The bizarre story concerns the king (Jean Marais) of a strange, enchanted land.

One of the highlights of the eighth Musho! International Theatre Festival of One and Two Person Theatre hosted by The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) in KZN at the Catalina Theatre in Durban from 16 – 20 January 2013 is a morning master-class on puppetry. 

A master class on puppetry and puppet techniques of the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Theatre will be conducted by Nieke Lombard on Monday 21 January from 9.00-12.00.  Attendance is free, but bookings are essential.

Nieke Lombard has written and performs in Elnora & Nirvana which comes to Musho! on Sunday 20 January at 4pm. The production, directed by Stephanie Brink is about Nirvana who is Elnora's spirit who spends her days with Elnora, reminiscing on the past.  Elnora's inner child makes an appearance as she comes to grips with her life.  Elnora is brought to life through the delightful techniques of the acclaimed Handspring Puppet Company. It is suitable for ages13+ and is 45 minutes long.

 Two productions are travelling from Zimbabwe to be part of the eighth Musho! International Theatre Festival of One and Two Person Theatre, hosted by The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) in KZN at the Catalina Theatre in Durban from 16 – 20 January 2013 featuring virtually 20 productions over six days, all celebrating the art of the one and two-performer plays.

The two productions from Zimbabwe share insights into the challenges of contemporary life in Zimbabwe and grapple with some pertinent socio-political and cultural issues. The productions have been given tour support from Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

First up is Allegations. What does ‘national healing’ really mean to a white farmer and a black rural dweller?  Is it possible to just let sleeping dogs lie?  Allegations examines Zimbabwe’s brutal past and present, and is a true story of hope, fear and frustration in the country today. 

It was sold out at when it toured to the Edinburgh Festival.  It is produced by Almasi Collaborative Arts (Zimbabwe); written by Mandisi Gobodi, directed by Patience Tawengwa and performed by Dan Hargrove and Everson Ndlovu. It will be staged on Saturday 19 January at 6pm. It is a drama; suitable for 16+ ages and runs at 60 minutes.

Half empty / Half full is the final production at the festival this year. Two political leaders from highly contesting factions crumble when they face a public uprising. Problems they failed to solve and encounters and alliances they have faced and forged, which form their political history, good and bad, are narrated through this satire on contemporary Zimbabwean politics. 

Produced by Savannah Trust (Zimbabwe) Created by Tafadzwa Hananda and Teddy Mangawa, written by Leonard Matsa, directed by Daniel Maposa with assistance from Lloyd Nyikadzino and performed by Tafadzwa Hananda and Teddy Mangawa. It will be staged on 
Sunday 20 January at 6pm. It is a comedy / satire and is suitable for ages 13+. It runs at 60 minutes.

The workshop is aimed at those groups or performers who are planning to mount productions on the fringe at the 2013 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.      
The workshop, which will be facilitated by Emma Durden and Gisele Turner, will focus on the following:

•What to expect from Grahamstown
•Completing the online forms for the festival fringe
•Getting the most out of your festival fringe booklet space by writing a brilliant blurb

The workshop will be hosted at the PANSA offices at 76 Clark Road, Glenwood, Durban from 10am until 12pm on Monday 14 January.

Time for the Musho Theatre Festival and a Puppet Master Class

The Musho Theatre Festival is almost here and along with it there will be a free Puppet Master Class

The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) in KZN will host the eighth Musho! International Theatre Festival of one and two person theatre, at the Catalina Theatre in Durban from 16 – 20 January 2013, featuring 18 productions over five days, all celebrating the art of the one and two-performer plays.

'Musho’ - isiZulu for an enthusiastic praise response, something similar to 'Bravo!' - embraces many forms of theatre: from mime to physical theatre, drama to comedy-theatre.  It pays tribute to the smaller works featuring one and two performers.  These are intimate productions that showcase the skill of theatre performance and storytelling, as well as covering a wide range of styles, from drama to comedy and physical theatre.

After extensive research, PANSA realized that a festival early in the year staging more intimate theatrical productions is considered a useful and exciting start to the year by performers and audiences alike.  Musho! benefits the performers as staging their shows and collecting reviews early in the year helps them for future seasons of the production through the year.  The audiences love seeing an array of fabulous theatre early in the year when calendars are quiet and when the festive flurry is over.

The festival is organised by PANSA KZN, the Performing Arts Network of South Africa, with support from The Daily News, Ethekwini Municipality, KZN Department of Arts and Culture, Business and Arts South Africa, Twist, The Kingdom of the Netherlands, Pro-Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Based in Durban, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Performing Arts Trust supports, encourages, develops and stimulates all aspects of the performing arts in KZN.  The Trust considers applications in dance, drama, music, musical theatre, opera and performance poetry, with emphasis on assisting those who were previously disadvantaged.

While applications for multi-year undertakings are encouraged, this does not preclude one‑off projects.  Where grants are ongoing over a number of years, acknowledgements of receipt and progress reports must be received for the previous year, before consideration will be given to future funding.  Applications for new funding will be considered only if accompanied by a duly completed application form and all supporting documentation specified therein.

Applications must, wherever possible, also be accompanied by documentation proving that the applicants are tax exempt.  The trust receives support from donors as it operates on extremely low overheads, and the trustees give their services voluntarily.  The trust’s policy is to keep its capital intact, and to distribute only its income.  The trust does not have sufficient funds to meet all the requests it receives for assistance and is always looking for new donors to broaden its scope of support in the performing arts in KZN, and to provide a stronger capital base.  Donations made to the Trust may be claimed as a tax deduction.

Performing arts practioners are invited to write short letters of intent outlining in one page the nature of the project, and the total amount requested.  Letters to be received by 4pm on 13 November 2012.  After an initial screening process, applicants will be sent a formal letter of application to complete and return before the end of January.  Applications will be selected early in February and successful applicants will be notified by 31 March 2013.

Musho is coming and so are Auditions

If you are a Actor or Writer or Producer or Director it is time to send in your proposals for Musho:

MUSHO! FESTIVAL 2013 - get your proposals in now!
PANSA KZN will be hosting the Musho! International Theatre Festival from 16 January to 20 January 2013. 

The festival is dedicated to small works and the celebration of the skill of the solo or duo performer.
Proposals must be submitted to kzn@pansa.org.za before 4 pm on 17 September 2012.
All proposals are read by a selection committee of local theatre professionals, and successful applicants will be contacted in October 2012.
