Review - Vodacom Smart Kicka - A Smartphone At A Smart Price

Last week Vodacom sent me the Vodacom Smart Kicka to have a look at.

I must say this is quite a surprise.  For those of you not informed about this phone, this is a entry level model for all of those who would like a smartphone.

Tech Details:

In the box you should find the phone hopefully, a battery, a charger, a headset and a quick start guide.

So how well does it run?

Surprisingly well, This is a full touchscreen phone so don't expect any keyboard on it.

On top of the phone is your on/off button.
Volume control is on the side of the phone.

It features 3 buttons on the bottom of the phone.

The button on the left takes you back to your home screen.
The centre button is to close an app.
The right hand button takes you to wallpapers, widgets and settings, have fun there.

The main screen has your time, date and widgets.  A useful feature at the top is a Google Search bar with voice searching as well if you prefer to shout out your search functions in a coffee shop maybe.

It also features a useful Data usage App if you care about blowing the odd 1GB now and again.

Storage: 4GB
Support for a 32 GB SD Card.

It also has a nice App to show you what is using your battery.

You can also schedule the phone to switch on or off.  You switch your phone off sometimes right?

Some of the useful Apps you can find on the phone:
  • A suite of Google products which include Chrome, Gmail, Google+, Maps, Play Music, Play Books, Play Newsstand, Play Games, Drive, YouTube and Hangouts.
  • Vodacom Apps and My Vodacom and Vlive and more.
  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Camera and Video Player
  • Clock
  • Facebook
  • Sound Recorder
  • Radio
  • Notes
  • Twitter
  • Voice Search

Are you ready for this?  This smartphone should set you back around R549. Unheard of for a smartphone.  As you can see Vodacom have certainly changed the playing field in the smartphone category.

Rating: 8/10

The Vodacom Smart Kicka is available at your nearest Vodacom outlet.

Over 16 000 music fans rocked Durban Day

More than 16,000 music fans rock out at Durban Day!

More than 16,000 people spent a perfect Sunday afternoon in Durban, rocking to some of the best music in SA!

People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium came alive on Sunday as families and friends hung out with the likes of Mafikizolo, Freshly Ground, The Parlotones and Mi Casa.

East Coast Radio’s Marketing Manager, Renee Burton, says, “Bringing people together for the love of music – well, there's nothing more powerful than that. And Durban Day 2014 showcased just that! Through this event, East Coast Radio has undoubtedly positioned itself as a true catalyst to both unite and mobilise Durban...as well as KZN at large.”

Capetonian heartthrob, Jimmy Nevis, kicked off the 6th annual Durban Day, whipping his female fans into frenzy with his smooth moves.

Durban rock band, Gangs of Ballet, rocked the socks off everyone; The Arrows got all on their feet with their mega-hits.

Mafikizolo whipped fans into a frenzy with their pulsating, high energy performance.

Freshly Ground kept the adrenalin pumping.

When The Parlotones stepped on stage, the party was in full swing! Khuli Chana teamed up with The Parlotones for Sleepwalker which pumped up the crowd adrenalin further.

Mi Casa brought the curtain down on yet another successful Durban Day, with the crowd begging for more!

For the first time ever, the Durban Day concert streamed live, with people tweeting us from 10 000km away saying they were enjoying the show!

The Durban Day line-up included: Jimmy Nevis, BlackByrd, The Arrows, Mafikizolo, Gangs of Ballet, Freshly Ground, Mi Casa and The Parlotones with Khuli Chana.

Congratulations To The Traffic Guy - 30 Years Of Radio and Happy Birthday!

'It's been an amazing adventure from day 1', says ECR's Traffic Guy as he celebrates 30 years on air.

(Johan Von Bargen - JVB - The Traffic Guy - Image Supplied)

It's also his birthday today so he has more reason to celebrate.

His first traffic report was in 1984 for the then Radio Port Natal (which went on to become East Coast Radio).  At that time he was a traffic officer with the Durban City Police.

Fast forward 30 years and JVB is one of the most recognisable voices on the radio.  More than 1.6 million people tune in to hear his traffic report so that they can safely navigate traffic to get to work/school/home.

Johann Von Bargen is also a wealth of information and full of anecdotes.  He also has a huge female following.
