INDABA 2013 is coming with a travel bloggers conference, East Coast Radio wins big and a art exhibit coming up

Tourism INDABA - Africa's top travel show, 11 - 14 May 2013, Durban ICC

Heritage and Culture a major focus of exciting INDABA 2013

The South African Tourism INDABA 2013, Africa’s top travel show, is set to offer unrivalled opportunities, new innovations and networking platforms for the tourism trade and international buyers this year to stimulate tourism business in a market growing well above the rate of global growth.

Between January and November 2012, South Africa had attracted over 8.3 million international tourists and grown at 10.5% (against average global tourism growth of 4% in 2012), as the country continued to entrench its reputation as a world-class leisure and business events destination.

For all global and local companies, individuals or tourism industry stakeholders keen to share in this growth story, INDABA 2013 at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre from 11 - 14 May 2013 will be an unmatched event on the regional African tourism calendar not to be missed.
Last year’s INDABA theme of “Shaping our Future Together” - which paid tribute to the joint efforts of South Africa’s tourism industry and its global partners in achieving the phenomenal growth in recent years - will again be the theme at INDABA 2013, which will also have a strong ‘Heritage and Culture’ focus.

For anyone wanting to do business with South Africa and its Southern African neighbours and to get a better feel for the regional African tourism industry, INDABA 2013 will be a treasure trove of key introductions, business opportunities and exposure to hundreds of exhibitors across the tourism spectrum. For the tourism industry, there is the opportunity to interact and forge strong business links with some of the world’s top travel buyers.
Over 1 165 main and sharing exhibitors and 2 000 international and local buyers - 250 of them top international buyers hosted by South African Tourism - have already confirmed their attendance at INDABA 2013, with that number growing daily.

While South Africa is a destination of spectacular beauty, offering every conceivable tourist attraction under the African sun to suit every pocket, the destination’s differentiator is its warm, hospitable people and the memories they leave visitors with long after they’ve left.
A major new addition at INDABA this year will be a ‘Heritage and Culture Pavilion’ located at the Durban Exhibition Centre, which will innovatively showcase South Africa’s world heritage sites, its leisure offerings, culture, art, design and music - all of which combine to tell South Africa’s story, its history, its future and gives better insight into its people.

The pavilion is a major project undertaken by the National Department of Tourism and South African Tourism, in collaboration with the MOJA Heritage Collection, and it will be an exhibition of some of the country’s best heritage and culture tourist offerings and distinctively South African tourism products.
All delegates - exhibitors, buyers, media and visitors - are encouraged to visit the ‘Heritage and Culture’ pavilion, to experience South African stories woven in folklore, myth and history and the country’s globally celebrated sense of style in design, arts and crafts.

“Our market research shows that travellers are increasingly looking to experience the unique, authentic, personal South African stories. They are looking to meet the locals, experience where they live, eat where they eat and be part of the country’s culturally rich lifestyle, while learning about the history of this great country. The Heritage and Culture pavilion will be an exciting addition to INDABA 2013 and we have also included a number of new elements to the show this year which will be of major value to buyers and exhibitors,” says South African Tourism Chief Executive Officer Thulani Nzima.

INDABA is primarily a trade show and to this end the Speed Marketing sessions, which were very popular at INDABA 2012, will again be an even more integral part of the show this year, with the focus on National Parks of South Africa on Saturday, Heritage and Culture on Sunday and Wine Routes of South Africa on Monday. The speed marketing sessions will give hundreds of international buyers the invaluable opportunity of being exposed to - and to do business with - a wide cross-section of South African tourism products.
The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) will again at INDABA 2013 host a master class with TripAdvisor, the world’s biggest and most influential travel website with 60 million unique monthly users. The workshop will be open to all star-graded accommodation establishments and will be an invaluable session, providing tips first-hand from TripAdvisor experts on how best to use the platform to market your establishment to a worldwide and increasingly socially-engaged audience.

Another exciting feature at INDABA for the first time will be a Travel Bloggers conference on the eve of the show, attended by some of the most influential international and local bloggers, who will unpack the changing face of destination marketing and the importance of personalised, user-generated content and social media engagement and its impact for the tourism trade.

At INDABA this year, particular attention has been paid to making sure that exhibitors, buyers, media and stakeholders are able to connect with all the key people, places and things they need for a successful INDABA.
One of the innovations this year, besides the information on the website, mobile app and social media coverage of the event, is technology specifically designed to allow easy connections - which will be called ‘INDABA Connect’.

INDABA Connect is a simple, but powerful platform that allows information, contact details, images and presentations to be easily shared among show delegates, in a very simple integrated way. By simply touching a delegate or exhibitor's tag at an exhibitor's stand, presentation, event or activation, users will have all the information attached to their online INDABA Connect profile, which will make getting in touch easier and more productive than sharing business cards, brochures and CD-Roms or USB sticks. This will also enable better engagement for delegates before, during and after the show - allowing for more meaningful connections this year.
The Matchmaking diary system, designed to facilitate important business connections between exhibitors and buyers at INDABA, will again be in place.

“The South African tourism industry is a very exciting one to be part of right now and we are confident the growth we are experiencing will translate into increased business opportunities. Our potential is huge and to unleash it we are working hard to attract quality global buyers to INDABA 2013, who are committed to doing tourism business with South Africa and to tap into our destination’s unique and diverse offerings. Despite tough economic times, South Africa’s tourism industry has continued to see growth in recent years and as a collective we need to grow and shape the future of our industry together. INDABA remains the premier regional African tourism platform for global buyers to gain easy access to the widest possible cross-section of the South African tourism industry - all under one roof - and we are very excited about the show this year,” says Nzima.

Over 600 local and international journalists and broadcasters are set to cover all the tourism news and trends at INDABA. A number of news-gathering events and activations have been planned, including topical briefings to give insight into South African Tourism’s market outlook, in-market campaigns and activities.
INDABA will take place from May 11 to 14. For more information on the show and for details on how to register to attend, visit www.indaba-southafrica.co.za.

Art Exhibit Coming up for Umhlanga 24th April 6pm at 8 Solstice Road, New Town Centre, Umhlanga Ridge.

Raja Oshi 2.jpg

A Work by Raja Oshi

"Uncontained"
An exhibition by Raja Oshi
With sculptures by Tim Mostomi

Mwimbi Fine Art Gallery cordially invites you to the official opening of "Uncontained", an exhibition by Raja Oshi and Tim Motsomi. In 1994, Raja Oshi graduated at the College of Fine Art and Applied Art in Sudan at the University of Science and Technology. For an extended period of time, Oshi and her family lived in UAE, Norway, UK, France and Germany. Oshi’s geometric but vibrant paintings show themes gravitating towards woman as equal commentor’s in our contemporary societies. Her fascination with colour coded shapes reflects ideologies attached with woman depicted in societies.

In Tim Motsomi’s sculptures, he tries to emphasise his interest in “materiality and the liminal space between beauty and  homeliness, loss and gain, fragility and strength, self and other, fact and truth” and how these polarities  can give insight to the development of both personal narratives and shared(cultural) narratives.  Tim uses his own body as a tool to reflect the act of ‘remembering’, fictional or otherwise, as an entity with corporeal potential. What results from this is a historical mis en-scene that is less about fact and rather about an imagined ideal.  As emphasized in his sculptures, the figures he creates remain knowingly mute and seemingly unaware (closed eyes) of the fact that they are on view; whilst at the same time they seem to be policing their own secret and fantastical historiographies.
The "Uncontained" exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions in the new space that invites artists to negotiate through ideologies that have confronted conventional structural patterns in art making and presentation.  These interpretations open up new possibilities in evaluating previous methods employed to portray artists as makers but also contributors in community and societal development.

The exhibition is curated by Zimbabwean born Lee Garakara  who aims is to encourage and promote contemporary African art not only locally but also through international arts scene.  Furthermore, MFAG hopes to show competitiveness and the high standards produced by contemporary African artist in KZN. Garakara wishes to establish long term relationships with local artists and Contemporary galleries as well as learning each other cultural values and artistic production that may influence and benefit communities in both ends. We look forward to seeing at the opening the opening and witness this birth of this new partnership with Miele Durban. The exhibition will be opened by Karen Buckenham at 6pm on 24th April and will run until the 29th May, 2013. MFAG is now situated at 8 Solstice Rd, Cnr Millenium Boulevard. Shop 1 Ground Floor, Millenium Towers, Umhlanga Rocks. For more info please visit or email the curator at info@mwimbifineart.com, www.mwimbifineart.com. 072 229 6530.

A short story

MISS JONES by Andrew Verster

“Have you met Miss Jones, people asked as we passed by, to quote Noel Coward or is it Oscar Hammerstein?”
“Is she the one with the short skirts and low-cut neckline?”
“No, that’s her mother. Miss Jones is dumpy and looks as if she had got her clothes at a car-boot sale.”
“I prefer the sound of Mother Jones .”
“You gather she’s a hooker?”
“I would never have guessed!”
“Ultra sophisticated. Penthouse in Umhlanga. Porsche.  Salukis.”
“By the way, why did you ask if I knew her?”
“She’s coming round for Bridge tomorrow evening, and we are one short.”
“Pity. Scrabble’s my game.”
“Win some, lose some.”
“Ask her about Scrabble anyway. You never know.”
“See you. Must rush. I’m doing a brinjal lasagna. She’s a vegetarian. Which is hard to believe.”

Presenters 'tag along' sportstars

Image 2.jpg

East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard and Zaba Simbine ‘tag’ Sunfoil Dolphins cricketers Khaya Zondo, Cameron Delport and Cody Chetty to join in the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk.

As families across KwaZulu-Natal step up to take part in this year’s Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk on 26 May, East Coast Radio’s Drive with Damon team has challenged local sportsmen to ‘tag along’.  After a morning of fun on Durban’s beachfront a number of Sunfoil Dolphin cricketers said they were eager to take part in the event, which caters for all ages and fitness levels.

Cricketer Cameron Delport says, “I think it's a great way for the whole family to get together and do some exercise on Durban’s awesome beachfront and have a great family day out.” His fellow team mate Cody Chetty says he’ll be joining in to set an example for the people of the province to lead a healthy lifestyle. He adds, “It’s a great initiative to get us players involved with the fans and to interact with them while walking.”
East Coast Radio Presenter Damon Beard says, “Life's too short to not try everything at least once. So we’re not just calling on athletes to ‘tag along’ and have fun with us, but listeners too!”
Participating in the walk is something you’ll want to share, so get your nearest and dearest to ‘tag along’ and then tag it on Facebook and Twitter. You can enter at selected Totalsports stores across KwaZulu-Natal or online at www.ecr.co.za. Listen to East Coast Radio and watch press for more details.

A Short Story

A DOG TALE by Andrew Verster

“You’ve  run over my dog.”
“I certainly did not.”
“But it’s under the wheel of your car.”
“Can’t think how it got there.”
“Poor Bonzo’s dead.”
“No denying that.”
“But YOU did it.”
“I beg to differ.”
“What on earth are you talking about?”
“He was dead before I ran over him.”
“Are you MAD? Would YOU be walking a dead dog on a leash?”
“Certainly not. But I’m not you. And there’s no accounting for what other people do.”
“Look at him. As flat as a pancake.”
“Flattish.”
“Is that all you can say?”
“FLAT, then. Is that better?”
“I’ll report this to the police.”
“You do that, and in the meantime would you move your dog. I have a meeting and I’m late.”
“What did you say your name was?”
“I didn’t.’
“No matter, I’ll just tell them the ugly man with halitosis did it.”
“But I’ve just brushed my teeth.”
“Brushing’s not enough. Try flossing.”
“Thanks for the tip.”
“No problem. Where did you say Musgrave Centre was?”
“Right here. We are IN it.”
“Must rush. Nice to meet you. Don’t forget your dog.”

Young and old sign up for the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk.

Entries for the 2013 Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk opened earlier this week and previous walkers are already planning who they’ll ‘tag along’.  The event takes place on Sunday 26 May and people are encouraged to get their loved ones to ‘tag along’ and then tag it on Facebook and Twitter.

One of last year’s oldest participants, 83 year old Haley De Klerk says he and his wife Gloria will again be taking part with the hopes of inspiring others to ‘tag along’, no matter their age. Former runners Haley and Gloria haven’t slowed down; they tackled the 20km route last year, “We enjoyed meeting and talking to people of all race groups and ages, the atmosphere was one of togetherness. We will definitely be there again this year and hope we’re an example to younger people that one is never too old to take up the challenge.”

The Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk will again offer walkers the choice of four distances - 5km, 10km, 15km or 20km - with all routes starting on the promenade near uShaka Marine World. Another avid walker who was among last year’s 23 804 participants is Dasarath Harilal from Stanger. He was at the very first event in 2004 and every subsequent Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk. This energetic family man says he not only walks in the main event, but also gets his whole family to ‘tag along’ to the Mini Big Walk, “Everyone joins me, my wife, my two children, children-in-law and two grandchildren. My grandchildren, who are now five and two years old, love it so much and have already asked me to enter them.”

Joanne Maxwell, a mom from Westville, also has fond memories of all the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walks that her family have joined in, “The very first time we did the event, my daughter who is now 10 years old, was around four years old and travelled most of the distance on her dad’s shoulders.” She says her husband and her will get their two children to ‘tag along’ again this year.

You can enter at Totalsports stores across KwaZulu-Natal or online at www.ecr.co.za. Listen out to East Coast Radio and watch press for more details.

Some poetry for you by Timothy Sparks

      ÏƒÏ„ους Έλληνες  ,dedicated to Zoe.

The coast road in our breath
Was roses from all the world.
We travelled to forgotten places
From climbing clouds raises castles
In their homeland, combines in dances
Spoken half through tears once through shadows.

We converse with years, in-between
Us, distance lures to lagoons
Of forever; calling back present
From past, one word of Ancient Greek
Draws laughter from us, tied together
In a heaven of our making,
The words that some lied
In a our ears dream struck;
We wonder where the hills
Mark our philosophy, our fears
In this cold Century in absentia.

Laughter remains with us sudden
As the aperture freezes a heart
One second but the waves
Frame a good moment, an ancient moment
When smiling we have crossed the river.

Book now for the BASA Education Programme at the KZNSA in Durban with @sharlvers and @AlmaMaxwell

Book early for this one!

With a new Kwa-Zulu Natal representative on the ground and an increased focus on the relevance, advancement and sustainability of the arts in the region, the upcoming Business Arts SA - BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, are not to be missed by arts practitioners.

The first Durban series of workshops in the 2013 BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, take place on April 11th at the KZNSA Gallery in Bulwer Road, Glenwood and are free to pre-registered participants.

Businesses will also be able to take part in the focused activities on April 11th by attending a business breakfast also at the KZNSA Gallery.

The business breakfast will include national and regional Business and Arts South Africa representatives and will give insight into a number of initiatives aimed at business. These include the first-of-its-kind BASA Arts Sponsorship Management Toolkit, which gives South African businesses a tool to navigating the sponsorship cycle and, ultimately, the ability to measure the effectiveness of arts sponsorship as a strategic part of any business.

The Durban workshops are also a chance for businesses and arts practitioners to connect with newly appointed Business and Arts South Africa representative in the region - Sharlene Versfeld of Versfeld & Associates.

Versfeld has been involved professionally in the South African arts sector since 1987 and has a long-standing reputation for her extensive work as an arts marketer most notably with the various festivals hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  In 2012 Versfeld undertook research for the British Council, with Nicolette du Plessis of Cultural Radius, on the South African arts landscape in relation to international agencies and collaborations. She is additionally a Board member of the Flatfoot Dance Company and does pro bono marketing for Action in Autism in KwaZulu-Natal.

“This is a challenging chapter in the arts industry in South Africa,” Versfeld says of her new tenure.

“Tough as it may be, we truly believe that businesses are looking for new and innovative ways to leverage their brands, whether from a sponsorship point of view or from a meaningful corporate social responsibility perspective.

“The research that BASA has done, the relationships developed with business and the inroads made into professionalising the arts industry provides a solid foundation for the further development of arts and business relationships, and we look forward to being part of a motivated and skilled team to help facilitate this in KZN.”

The Durban BASA Education Programme workshops, supported by Etana Insurance, are divided into three sessions and will cover social media, publicity basics (as part of the Back To Basics programme) and fundraising.

Are you all aTwitter and LinkedIn to Facebook? 11:00-12:30

Alma Maxwell of Outsourced Communications will share some insights about Social Media and how arts organisations can use these "versatile free-to-use" platforms to get the conversations going.

Back to Basics 13:00-14:30

Publicity and the Art of getting your message across in a very cluttered media space. Sharlene Versfeld and Kwazi Ngubane of Versfeld & Associates, unpack the basics of publicity and share some useful tips in getting media coverage.

Fundraising 14:45-16:00

From crowd-sourcing to sourcing-crowds of money, a professional fund-raiser will look at hints and tips to increase your opportunity of raising funds for your organisation/project.

The BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, has seen workshops already held in Johannesburg and Cape Town and upcoming workshops planned for the Eastern Cape as well as Limpopo regions.

To be part of the BASA Education Programme, supported by Etana Insurance, and attend these important, insightful and stimulating workshops contact: Jessica Dennison at Jessica@basa.co.za or 011 447 2295

A short story by Andrew Verster

THE MEETING
“I didn’t see your mother at church this morning.”
“You didn’t see her last Sunday either.”
“You are right. Come to think of it.”
“Not surprising, she’s dead.”
“Who?”
“My mother.”
“That was sudden.”
“Not really. She died three years ago.”
