News Of A Business Competition For Entrepreneurs and Highlights From The Hookup Dinner Durban

Last night was 'The Hook Up Dinner Durban' something that has started to become a big event for Durban.
What is it?  Well it involves a number of inspiring entrepreneurs who come together monthly to network and also to pitch.  The winner gets a nice cash infusion for their business.

(Entrepreneurs enjoy a networking mixer where they each have 1 minute to tell the group what they do.)

The event involves Pitches by Entrepreneurs, Audience Feedback on Pitches, Networking Mixers a Guest Speaker and then the winner is announced. After that more networking.  Add in drinks and meals and sounds like a wonderful enivornment for entrepreneurs.

The event is held at The Factory Cafe a local hive of entrepreneurs in the daytime.  It features free wi-fi and great coffee for customers.  We first heard from Arno from The Factory Cafe about their coffee and also how Fair Trade coffee works in the industry.

The Hookup Dinner had some great pitches including the winning one which featured branded tablets for companies.  Well done to Thembi for her winning pitch.

We also heard from the guest speaker Thulani Cele, former Chairman of the Franchising Assocation of South Africa.  He reminded us, 'If you have an idea there are people around you that can help you get to where you want to be.'  Wise words indeed.

This week we have an exclusive interview with the new presenter on the weekend for East Coast Radio.

We sat down with Carol Ralefeta to find out all about her.

10 Questions with Carol Ralefeta

Where were you born?
North West in Mafikeng.

What was it like working on 94.7 and Metro FM?
It was great.  I've been on radio since 2001.  I've done retail, commercial and corporate radio.  Each one was challenging.  ECR is great and very exciting.

How did you become a Radio DJ?
In 2001 I studied at RAU, there the bug bit me and I did some auditions.  I worked as the news presenter and loved it.  Radio has been good to me.

What advice do you have for people who want to be Radio DJ's?
You need to have a passion for it.  You should be okay with struggling and with defeat.  You need to be able to bleed for it.  That's passion.

What will your show be like?
Awesome music, I have a crazy personality.  Expect to be entertained.

Tell us about Mika Stefano?
We have a 'Ride or Die' philosophy.  He will be on the show and giving us a local insight into entertainment. He also has his own blog and he loves entertainment.

How did you end up owning a makeup agency?
I'm a qualified makeup artist.  Also I'm in the entertainment industry so it's a great fit.

Who inspires you?
My Mom, she inspires me to want to do better.  She's always been a fighter.  My sister as well, she's powerful.

What's the best advice ever given to you?
My Mom telling me 'I will always be your Mother.'  Whether you 20 or 60 years old.  Sometimes in this industry you can get swept away but she keeps me grounded.

How do you use social media?
I enjoy it.  I reveal a lot more on Instagram.  You see more of my personal life.
I block freaks.
My Twitter and Facebook is more open and for work.  

Bonus Question: Advice for youngsters who are bullied on social media?
Lock your account if you feel you are being bullied.  Locking it protects your account.  Even if friends bully you block them.

This week I interviewed Jeremy ahead of his talk at the inaugural Buy, Sell and Invest (BSIV)
Conference 1st - 3rd July at the Sandton Convention Centre hosted by The City of Joburg.

What makes a good brand?

You have to manage it well whatever the brand is, principles need to be laid down and values
and quality.  Do the basics of branding well.

Give us an example of a good South African brand and why are they so good?

MTN.  It is managed in a good disciplined way and they have managed to take this SA Brand global.
It is now in 22 countries worldwide.

Why do people keep flocking to buy Coke and KFC and why are people standing in a queue in
Cape Town to sample Burger King?

They want it.  They lust after it and they are prepared to pay big money for it.  There are so many choices out there, these companies are the ones who do their marketing very well.  Those companies which don't market very well are going to die very quickly.

What does Johannesburg need to do to build their brand in the world?

Invest in it a lot more.  We did the original work for the brand.  They keep putting things out to tender.
They need to use the same team and invest in building the brand around the world.

Tell us about a day in the life of Jeremy Sampson?

8am I'm in the office.  I'm the Executive Chairman of Interbrand so it's breakfast, working meetings
and those can sometimes run right through till 6pm.

When things go right through, there are lots of meetings.  Etv news often ask me to go in for interviews.
It's also interesting travelling and speaking overseas.  I am asked to speak all over.

What book are you currently reading?

I don't have time to read books.  I spend more time reading magazines or digital magazines.  I also love Twitter.

What advice do you have for people who want to make a success of their lives?

Have a plan.  Have a job doing what you love doing.  Decide what you want.  Don't be bullied by other people and enjoy it.

Tell us about Interbrand?

It is New York based.  We are in 40 cities worldwide.  We are the original brand consultancy.
The company is 40 years old.  More and more people want a presence globally so they are contacting us.

How should a brand use Social Media and Twitter?

Use all channels to market so use it.  I thoroughly enjoy Twitter so use it.
Just be relevant.

What do you do to relax?

Reading and Tweeting and also travel and good food and wine.

The Rise of The Insanity League - Aaron McIlroy, Ben Voss and John van de Ruit

Everyone’s ‘normal’ till you get to know them!
 

The Insanity League is a comedy movement, comprising comic actors Aaron McIlroy, Ben Voss and – making a welcome return to the stage after an absence of a decade – John van de Ruit. The trio have teamed up to deliver a sketch comedy show which pokes, provokes and tickles in all the right places – and they’ll be hitting the road from March 2013 for a nationwide tour

The Insanity League was conceived early in 2012 after too much caffeine and not enough fresh air. An inspired conversation led to the frantic scribbling-down of comedy sketch ideas and a plan for nationwide domination was hatched. Between March and September 2013, The Insanity League will bring their more than slightly-left field ideas to theatres in Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Hilton, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Their ‘Minute of Madness’ sketches are already broadcast regularly on East Coast Radio and Jacaranda 94.2FM.

The show promises to be more than just a random selection of sketches – the team is preparing a comic study on insanity unlike anything ever seen on the stage in South Africa before. An inspired set is taking shape around their manic ramblings, with Director Greig Coetzee carefully crafting the trio’s comic performances.

Aaron McIlroy is probably South Africa’s least-tauntable ginger. Provoke him at your peril – the master of scything punch lines and nuclear takedowns improvises quicker than a tenderpreneur in front of a Carte Blanche camera. McIlroy has previously earned his stripes and laughs by touring the country with killer comedy shows including Dof, The Golfer, The Loser, and @work.

Ben Voss is best known for his alter ego - Beauty Ramapelepele – a fixture on the South African theatre circuit with a residency on Easy Coast Radio and Jacaranda. Together with John van de Ruit he co-developed the explosive comedies - Green and Black Mamba.

John van de Ruit rose to prominence with Voss in the abover-mentioned sketch theatre shows, developing an eager following countrywide. He rose to prominence as an author with his ‘Spud’ series. Four books and two films later, he’s extricated himself from the couch and has joined the team for an insanely hilarious romp.

On Monday 11th of February 2013 I was invited to the official opening of AFDA Durban.
Mark that date.  It represents a symbolic date for Durban.  A new Film School for us.

The school is situated in the leafy suburb of Glen Anil.  It has taken some time to start this
Film School in Durban but finally it is here.



Franco Human is the Dean of the Durban Campus.

Richard Green is the Head of the film school.

Our own famous actor Rajesh Gopie is now head of live performance.
He has appeared on stage and screen and it is good to see him at this campus.

Janet van Eeeden is in charge of production courses and script-writing lectures.

World Day of Remembrance is the day we get to stand together and

Not only do we want to celebrate their lives, but we want to create
awareness about safety on our roads, especially the No 1 cause of
accidents – drinking & driving.

There is a great deal of excitement ahead of the ECR President's Race

Three ‘President of the East Coast’ candidates to face public vote.

33 year old Loryn Holmes, 26 year old Abonga Nkwelo and 32 year old Ashley Raspal will be vying for public vote over the next week to become the first ‘President of the East Coast’.  These determined candidates faced a series of challenges and beat three other hopefuls to secure a spot in the top three. Among the challenges have been fly-fishing in the Midlands and game spotting in the bush.

This morning on the Breakfast Stack Praveshnee Naidoo was eliminated from the competition. Ashley had tied with her during the game spotting challenge, but past performance came into play and Ashley advanced to the next round. It’s now up to the people of KwaZulu-Natal to vote for their ‘President’.

Ashley Raspal from Phoenix says, “Just like Gotham City, every city needs a super hero. I’m that guy and I’m a friendly and bubbly person.” This positive and inspirational Customer Services trainer says he loves people, the outdoors and cricket. He’s also admits to a degree of eccentricity and says he once ate locusts and worms at a market, just to see what they tasted like.

Loryn Holmes from Glenwood says she should be the President of the East Coast because, “I’m a born and bred Durbanite, avid Sharks supporter and my number one passion is people.” Loryn is a go-getter who loves socialising. Not only is this PR and eventing lady mad about Twitter, but she loves the outdoors and enjoys cycling and running.

Abonga Nkwelo believes he’s the best fit for the ‘job’ because has he been performing well in the challenges so far and loves everything about the East Coast. This warm natured guy from Umhlanga says, “I love the Sharks rugby team, the Dolphins cricketers, Amazulu football club, the beach and the province’s winters.” Abonga is self-employed and plays both music and rugby.

East Coast Radio Durban Day line-up announced.

If this year’s Durban Day line-up is anything to go by the stage is set for one of the best events yet! Among those performing at Moses Mabhida’sPeoples Park on Sunday 9 September are big names like the world-famous Parlotones, afro-soul singer Lira and fiercely popular Johnny Clegg.

East Coast Radio Durban Day in association with the Sunday Times is seen by many as a highlight on KZN’s events calendar. It’s a chance for the whole family to enjoy some of the country’s top bands live in a relaxed setting while basking in Durban’s warm spring weather. Last year more than 8000 people delighted in having great local artists perform in the province. East Coast Radio jocks get behind Mandela Day.

Caring for abandoned babies, spending quality time with the elderly and making sandwiches for the underprivileged are just some of the ways the East Coast Radio’s on-air personalities will be spending their 67 minutes on Wednesday.

Many of the station’s presenters will be honouring Madiba by reaching out to those around them this Mandela Day. Breakfast Stack DJ Darren Maule will be working with TAFTA at a frail care centre. He says, “People tend to forget about elderly and the frail so I thought I’d go spread some cheer. They can’t make their way to my comedy shows, so I am taking my comedy to them. Everybody needs a good laugh.” Other Breakfast Stack team members – Samson Oduntan, Wez Cruickshanks and George Thorne - will be making sandwiches and handing them out to those in need.

The Workzone’s Makhosi Khoza will be inspiring Abet learners at Westville North Library. He says, “Empowerment is very close to my heart and I truly believe self-empowerment is the cornerstone of all personal development, so I'm doing my bit to applaud those who have embarked on this journey of learning.”

Abi Ray, meanwhile, will be volunteering her affections at ‘The Baby House’ - an organisation that takes in abandoned babies. She says, “It's close to my heart because of the sheer number of children who are in the system just waiting for someone to love them.” Weekend DJ, Nelisa Kala says she’ll be spending some of her time volunteering at TAFTA’s second hand shop – Granny’s Attic. Zaba Simbine from the Drive with Damon will be working with CheeseKids on Mandela Day. Ramona Kasavan will spend her time at Durban and Coastal Mental Health and be aiding in their awareness campaign.

East Coast Radio’s personalities hope that the people of KwaZulu-Natal will also get behind Mandela Day with some small act of kindness.
