Green Heart City Book & Design Boma
A meeting place for writers, illustrators, publishers, literary agents, booksellers, designers, architects and social entrepreneurs to network and exchange ideas trending on the literary and design landscape. KwaMuhle Museum will serve as the Nerve Centre for Boma activations. Key elements include The Frameside Lounge, Open House Durban Photo & Sketch Exhibition, BookCamp and Caravan of Words where writers will craft stories on ‘Durban and Democracy’. The KidZone will feature Life Size Scrabble, storytelling and character role-plays from African folktales. Food Wagons will serve traditional local foods - bunny chow, samp and beans, and local beverages such as Frankie’s Ginger Beer from the Midlands. The Goldilocks Freedom Word Mobile – Kunene Wagon will be stationed at the Book & Design Boma. The Tower of Text (ToT) experience invites UIA 2014 delegates and the public to build a Book Tower out of contributed books which will then be dropped off at orphanages, old age homes, and correctional centres. The ToT is structured as an attempt at the Guinness Book of World Records.
Open House Durban
An artetexture showcase of 20 Durban structures through the photographic lens and the sketch block – to promote the idea of creative economy. A competition will be launched to encourage UIA 2014 delegates and the public to take photos or make sketches of the selected buildings. Entries will be displayed in an Open House Durban Photo & Sketch Exhibition at the Book & Design Boma. Winners will be announced at a prize ceremony during UIA 2014.
Mobile Pop-Up Book Bench with Deaf Pavement Poets
‘Parks 4 Read’ is an ongoing initiative that is held in a park setting. BunnyKats, leprechauns, and Irish rag doll Bridie Beag exchange integrated tales to encourage a love for reading and drawing. This is achieved with the assistance of local writers and artists interacting with the public and sketching BunnyKats reading miniature classics on the BooK Bench. Hearing and Deaf Pavement Poets will write and perform poetry covering 20 years of democracy in South Africa and what it means.

50 SHADES OF BLACK SHINES!
From diamonds to sophisticated elegance, cheeky casuals and swimwear made
out of recycled goods, to spotting TV stars such as Ashish Gangapersad, Sisa
Hewana and Maurice Paige from Isidingo as well as Scandal’s, Clint Brink and
Indian actress, Varsha Harpal, to onstage personalities like Darrius Pillay,
Natalie Rungan and a former Miss South Africa, Joan Ramagoshi, it was a
night of the who’s who that turned up for the inaugural 50 Shades of Black
couture fashion show in association with the Geness Foundation hosted at the
Square Conference Centre in Umhlanga Rocks this past weekend!
Varshan Sookhun the Executive Director of the show said that he was over the
moon with the turn out to a packed house of glamourous patrons lending their
support to the KwaZulu Natal Blind & Deaf Society which is a cause close to
his heart. Sookhun was also pleased to confirm that Dr. Sheena & Sunil
Geness from the Geness Foundation committed their organisation for a further
three years in lending their support to the 50 Shades of Black.
The Geness Foundation made a R30 000 financial contribution to the charity,
and Dr Sheena Geness said she was also pleased that Durbanites contributed a
further R50 000 from the various auctions that took place after the show –
therefore, raising R80 000 in total for the KwaZulu Natal Blind & Deaf
Society.
“Watch this space for next year, with even more designers, more showstoppers
and most importantly more money that will be raised for the KwaZulu Natal
Blind & Deaf Society and thank you to all involved and who turned up,”

SURFS UP FOR THE 2014 DURBAN SURF CARNIVAL!
Durban’s New Pier Beach will be a place to “hang 10” with surfers from all around the country, gearing up for the 12th annual Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel this weekend from June 6-8.
This event, sanctioned by the Stand Up Paddleboard Association of South Africa (SUPSA) and KwaZulu Natal Longboard Surfing Association (KZNLSA) will host a number of surfing disciplines
This year will also include SUP Course Racing which is a new discipline to the event. Naish SUP is one of the leading SUP brands in the world and has been supporting the Durban Surf Carnival since its inception.
There will be two SUP racing events at the carnival, the first will be a distance race of 8-10km around a couple of cans (buoy markers) set out the back off Durban’s main beach front. The start and finish is set from the middle of the beach near New Pier (waves permitting), or alternatively from Vetchies Beach with the race estimated to last around 1 hour. The second race event will be a technical short-course of 2-3km where the paddlers will have to negotiate the surf-breakers going in and out several times around a set course from the beach to just behind the breaking waves. This race will consist of qualifying rounds leading up to a final - each race typically takes 10-15minutes.
Peter Petersen from Naish said, “SUP racing combines surfing skills with strength and stamina and is a great cross-training tool for a lot of surfers and SUP surfers. Hence we'll see a lot of the entrants in the surfing events also entering the SUP racing section”. He also added that this is a great opportunity to showcase their products and continue building their strong brand in the local market.
Should you wish to learn how to be the next “surfing sensation” the LEARN 2 SURF surfing school will be hosting free surfing clinics at the Durban Surf Carnival. LEARN 2 SURF have schools all over South Africa. Shaun Sellman from the Durban office said, “Our surf schools offer either group lessons or private coaching for you to learn to surf or improve your surfing skills and we also provide all the necessary equipment”. Sellman and his team are looking forward to passing on their skills to all the visitors who attend this year’s Surf Carnival. He also added that it is never too late to learn new skills in your life and encourages all age groups to learn how to surf.
The Durban Surf Carnival is free to the public to watch with a free SNAP SHOT Photographic Competition which is open to all to enter!
SUPSA is endorsing both the surfing and racing portion of the SUP events with the results counting towards the 2014 overall national ranking and will be used as a selection tool for the ISA World Championships.

Bulwer Park: Sunday 8 June
It June Market time! Darryl Hofmann and his Whole Food team have put together a June morning good food and craft market involving fabulous food and family activities in Bulwer Park on Sunday 8 June from 10am until 2pm.
The focus will be on fresh and fabulous food. Hofmann has carefully chosen stall holders to create a deli-vibe – allowing visitors to purchase produce from the stalls, and assemble a meal picnic style.
There will be fun activities for the kids, and the children's play area is operational. There will also be gift ideas, décor items, arts and crafts on sale.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Concert

On 15 June 2014, KZN ‘knit-wits’ from Zululand, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, the Midlands and the Drakensberg, will congregate at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick for a good cause: The cause is 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day – an initiative that aims to collect thousands of handmade blankets which will be distributed to those in need on Nelson Mandela Day (18 July).
The ‘knit-wits’ are in for a special treat with performances by acclaimed South African troubadour, Nibs Van der Spuy; passionate and versatile musician, Kaolin Thomson; one of South Africa's leading concert pianists, Christopher Duigan; Pietermaritzburg based musician and Idols finalist Erin Fourie, and Steyn’s goddaughter, Ella Grealy. Even if you are not a ‘knit-wit’ – join us for a great day out - dads are invited to join in too ….it is after all Father’s Day!
Joining the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement is easy.The only requirement is that the single bed sized blanket or baby blanket has to be handmade – no store bought blankets will be accepted. Blankets can be knitted or crocheted and should measure 150 cm x 200 cm. Most importantly, those who pledge to make a blanket must please keep their promise and complete the blanket or blankets by 1 July 2014.
Drop off points include Auto & General Insurance offices nationwide, the Auto & General Theatre on the Square, the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, The President's Award office in Grahamstown and Clifton Preparatory School in Nottingham Road in the Midlands Monday -Friday or contact Annie (abgrealy@iafrica.com) Charity beneficiaries will be announced closer to the time.
