East Coast Radio has invited four influential and dynamic speakers to help KwaZulu-Natal celebrate Women's Month.

Through the involvement of FNB and GIBS they were able to bring you some fantastic speakers.

There is a wonderful line-up in store for you at this breakfast:

Freshly Ground singer, Zolani Mahola, will talk motherhood and career.

Top Billing presenter and one of SA's premiere ballerinas, Lorna Maseko, will talk about the challenges she faced during her meteoric rise to fame.

Author and Madiba's assistant, Zelda la Grange, will share her heart-warming stories of life with one of the greatest men in the world.

Former Google SA boss, Stafford Masie, will share his advice on how to navigate the fast changing world of technology and the role his mother played in getting him to where he is today.

Hosted by ECR's Carol Ofori, The FNB Business Women's Breakfast in assocation with East Coast Radio is one of the most anticipated events on the KZN corporate calendar.

Insights from the Gibs / ECR Business Breakfast held in Durban today

There was plenty of brain food on offer at the breakfast as over 500 captains of industry attended the breakfast at the Durban ICC.

Dancers spiced up the morning at the GIBS ECR Business Breakfast brought to you by Trade and Investment Kwazulu-Natal.

Speakers at the GIBS ECR Business Breakfast were ushered onto the stage by 'praise singer' T-Bone.

Former Dean of GIBS, Nick Binedell reminded us that 'Economic growth is the oxygen of the country.'

The CEO of MTN Ghana, Serame Taukobong reminded us that 'We are part of Africa.'

Dion Change of Flux Trends gave us insight into our future world.  He told us to look out for Ingestible Tech.  He also suggested that to be at the forefront of business we should anticiapte disruption.

The great storyteller Gcina Mhlophe entertained us throughout her speech.

This was indeed a wonderful breakfast and the delegates left with wonderful thoughts in their heads, ready to build their business up.

Four dynamic women from some of SA’s most driven industries will be sharing their wisdom to an exclusive gathering of women at the FNB Business East Coast Radio Ladies Breakfast in association with GIBS.

The annual breakfast meet brings together women from all professions and industries in KZN who hope to take away valuable lessons and key insights from some of the country’s top women achievers.

Business Tips from the Speakers at TIKZN GIBS East Coast Radio Business Breakfast

Last week I attended this business breakfast and came away with some great business insight from the business leaders in attendance.

Five of South Africa's most influential thought leaders, strategists and trendsetters converged at Durban's ICC.  The event was sponsored by TIKZN.  The theme of the GIBS / East Coast Radio Business Breakfast was Strategy, Transformation and Branding. The MC was the hilarious Darren Maule from East Coast Radio.

Here are some of the tips that the speakers shared:

• You are surrounded by info now so you start resisting a lot of it
• You want to become a brand champion
• Social Media is a weapon of mass communication

• You need to give something to people that is meaningful
• What is it you are broadcasting?  Do your clients understand it and relate to it?
• A brand is not a logo
• A brand should have a strategy behind it
• What is so special about your brand?

Anwar Jappie - Brand Director - Nike Africa

• Be brave
• Go into spaces where people say you can't do it
• Look through the lens of the youth
• The youth are confident and opportunistic about Africa
• Half of Africa's population is under 25
• The Youth want to be treated with dignity and respect
• Consumers want it now
• This is now a portable life
• Africa is Number 2 Growth in Mobile Usage Worldwide
• You have to have a digital plan
• Mobile first, then digital
• Be laser focused, who are you speaking to?

All in all much food for thought.

An Inspiring ECR GIBS Executive Breakfast

This week I attended the East Coast Radio, GIBS Executive Breakfast.
It was indeed quite inspiring.

Speakers - Nicola Tyler, Buhle Dlamini, and Nick Binedell with East Coast Radio's Trish Taylor
and Seema Diahnan and TIKZN's Wendile Gumede and Norman Chorn.

Put on by East Coast Radio and Trade and Investment Kwazulu-Natal (TIKZN) the GIBS
Breakfast had some fantastic speakers.

Seema Diahnan from East Coast Radio started us off and introduced everyone.

Nicola Tyler was a wonderful MC for the event.

Transnet CEO Brian Molefe

We heard a great talk by Brian Molefe the Transnet CEO.  He told us about the developments
happening at Durban Harbour.  New Cranes will be put in place, new infrastructure.
Twenty Years from now the Durban Harbour will need upgrading.  Transnet is focused on spending on training as as well.  He told us that new jobs are on the horizon over the next 7 years.

Nick Binedell was very inspiring.  He reminded us to learn faster than the rate of change.  He also told us
that there was no country of our size that has produced so many champions.   He told us that SA has a legacy of greatness.  Good people want to work in great companies he said.  Great companies want to be in great countries.  People need great countries.

Norman Chorn showed us how organisations work and the changing face of technology.  This is a much more complex world he reminded us.  He asked us, 'What is the dominant competitive position of your company?'

Lastly we had an inspiring talk by Buhle Dlamini.  What a motivator he is.  He suggested we change our thinking and look for the opportunities.

MY DEAREST AUNT by Andrew Verster

It was a sad place, BOXLY HOUSE, a retirement home for the frail, started by Professor Ronald Boxly as somewhere to house his aged, fragile and garrulous mother of 89.

“Either I go mad, or she goes anywhere but here.”

It was sad because the Professor didn’t have quite enough money saved to do what people call “a proper job.” Unwillingly, he had to cut corners, and the result was very far from perfect, in fact, far from just alright.  The rooms were cramped, the ventilation poor, and with old people who are, often, through no fault of their own, not the most of hygienic people, the place had a fetid smell, no matter how much AIRWICK they planted here and there. The windows were thrown open first thing, come rain, hail, sunshine, hurricane or fog, and stayed that way till Matron left round seven and the night staff took over.  

But as most of the inhabitants were heading towards dementia, some hurrying, some ambling, the world they lived in bore little similarity to the actual world or that of Boxly House.”

“We do our best, but I often regret that our best is not good enough. Please excuse me, I see Hilda van Niekerk heading for the fish pond.  Sorry, I interrupted you. Who did you come to see?”

“Molly Stanton.”

“Didn’t they call you? How naughty of them. She let herself out this morning and apparently has taken a coach to Umhlanga, though we haven’t been able to trace the coach. Nor her. But I’m sure she’ll turn up, like a bad Penny. Oh I AM sorry. That was a most unfortunate turn of phrase.”
