Congratulations To The Traffic Guy - 30 Years Of Radio and Happy Birthday!

'It's been an amazing adventure from day 1', says ECR's Traffic Guy as he celebrates 30 years on air.

It's also his birthday today so he has more reason to celebrate.

His first traffic report was in 1984 for the then Radio Port Natal (which went on to become East Coast Radio).  At that time he was a traffic officer with the Durban City Police.

Fast forward 30 years and JVB is one of the most recognisable voices on the radio.  More than 1.6 million people tune in to hear his traffic report so that they can safely navigate traffic to get to work/school/home.

Johann Von Bargen is also a wealth of information and full of anecdotes.  He also has a huge female following.

Then this is for you. Music professionals are invited to apply for funding from a national mobility fund (for projects in South Africa) and a Regional Mobility Fund (for projects taking place in SADC countries except South Africa).

Grants for individuals are available for musicians, managers, promoters, producers, agents, groups.

Grants for organisations available to music organisations and businesses, record labels, agencies, forums, associations,, partnerships, local and regional organisations.

You have to be a SA citizen living in South Africa.
You must be established in SA.
You must be directly responsible for the prep and management of the project not an intermediary.

Types of projects that qualify:

• Tours and Concerts
• Collaborative Projects
• Professional development projects / visits

The Regional Mobility Fund applies to the following provinces:

• Project must take place in Gauteng or Western Cape or KwaZulu-Natal.
• Artists from all provinces are invited to apply.
• The project must take place in a different province from which the artist is based in.

If the 106km from PMB and 65km for Cato Ridge is too much to handle this time around, there is also the 35km fun ride which has been a hit with families in previous years.

With full road closures, get the bike pedals going and ride like the wind – mom, dad, grandparents, aunties, uncles and kids alike - on Sunday, October 12^th.

This family fun ride was introduced to the Amashova in order for families of all ages to get involved and starts from Old Main Road, Lillies Quarter, Hillcrest at 5:30am sharp, ending at Suncoast at a cost of only R130pp!

The Mini Shova ever popular with the little ones, will take place on the morning of Saturday, October 11^th. More details on the children’s event will be announced shortly.

New Features For Durban Business Fair

EThekwini Municipality is ready and gearing up to host the 16th annual Durban Business Fair on 19 – 21 September at Durban Exhibition Centre. The Fair has been expanded and enhanced with new features aimed at infusing valuable business information and to facilitate networking and growth opportunities.

The Durban Business Fair has new elements such as Business Connect which is scheduled for 26 August 2014 at the Hilton Hotel. Business Connect will feature influential and established business people as panelists who will share their essential business expertise with exhibitors, teaching them the tricks of the trade to foster growth and development by offering guidance, support and encouragement.

Review of UIA 2014 Durban - Day 3

Today marks my third day at the conference and my last day there.  It has been an amazing experience and they have had some fantastic speakers.

The keynote by Toyo Ito

Below are some of the highlights from Day 3:
The day started off with a keynote by Sindile Nganyama and he reminded us of the following: 'Whose heritage are we willing to embrace?' he also added 'What kind of society do we need to create for our children and our children's children.

Wang Shu showed us Beijing and Shanghai and told us that 'In China we do everything very fast.'  He started an architecture school with 1 teacher.  That teacher was him.  Now he has 600 students and 40 teachers.  He feels that maybe in China they have done too much construction.  'I spend a lot of my time in the conservation of villages.' said Shu.  'I like doing experiments in different areas,' said Shu.

Gerardo Salinas showed us Mexico City and informed us that Mexican people will always find a way to make things work.  'Before we start a project we look at what is the potential of the project,' said Salinas. He brought up a good point, 'How can you provide a mixed-use area instead of just office space?'  One of his buildings even features a facade that can be used for other purposes such as crossfit or offices.

After the keynotes I popped into a workshop by Mikhail Peppas who posed an interesting question, 'What makes up the identity of a city?'  He went on to ask, 'What is the identity of Durban?'

You see some amazing things at this conference, I walked by the Student Lounge and happened to see Cameron Sinclair giving a master class to eager students.

Later in the day we were treated to an interactive dance show with a able bodied dancer and a wheel chair bound dancer.  Quite wonderful to watch.

Next there was a presentation on Disasters and the highlights included:

• An earthquake doesn't take into account where you live.
• People become affected psychologically by disasters.
• The fact that people who live on streets and on subways can also be seen as disasters.
• Occupy Wall Street is another kind of disaster.

• Disasters can happen everywhere.
• We were also reminded that South Africa had an earthquake only yesterday. 

The final keynote was the great architect Toyo Ito. 

He has many awards and honours and one can see why.  

I shall forever remember him saying 'Next' everytime he wanted the slide moved to the next one. 

Here are the highlights from his keynote:

• 'There is no grid system in nature.'
• He showed us one of his designs that features tubes and each tube has a different use.
• Toyo Ito gave us a glimpse of a library he designed where the seats are by the huge windows thereby using natural light to the maximum.
• His latest project is a Opera House.
• 'The structure is complicated, like the human body.' revealed Ito.
• He even designed a roof garden on top of the opera building where they can even have smaller concerts.
• He reminded the architects of the future to be flexible, to save energy and to use natural energy.
• Toyo Ito received a round of applause for almost all of the designs he showed us.

Review of UIA 2014 Durban - Day 2

The second day brought with it some more amazing speakers.

The Student Lounge

Here are the main points from the keynote by Francis Kere

• 'It is we that decide what happens with our cities.'
• '98% of the Population in Burkina Faso build houses out of clay.'
• 'Whatever you do, the user has another idea for the building.'
• He built an Opera Stage in Africa for a client then it transformed into an Opera Village.
• He believes that education is the key for Africa to develop

He received a standing ovation for his keynote.  

Next up we heard from Susannah Drake and these were her highlights:

• 'My vision was to transform singular use spaces into multi-use spaces.'
• 'People want recreation spaces.'
• She showed us how water can be diverted in case of emergencies such as mass floods.

Next we heard from Kjetil Thorsen and these were the highlights:

• Some of his designs include a keyless, windowless, doorless museum
• He showed us how to design a farm on top of a shopping mall so as not to waste farm land

There are also many free events around the city and don't forget to stop by the Kwa Muhle Museum to see the Green Heart City Book and Design Boma.  Be sure to stop by for their lunch special of Chakalaka Bunny Chow.  They are there all week.

Look out for the interactive art displays at the conference. 

Be sure to see the mini film festival which is on the go at Coast of Dreams.   There are some wonderful documentaries with architecture themes.  Shows at 11am, 2pm and 6pm.  

One of the discoveries I found at the Expo section is that there is now a .archi web address exclusively for architects.  Pop by their stand or find out more at www.register.archi

There was also a book launch around the Sophia Gray Memorial Lecture.  You can find the book at The Book Lounge.  Sophia Gray was the first female architect.  She was self-taught and built mostly churches.

The Sophia Gray Memorial Lecture started with 40-50 people and now has 500-600 audience members. The next lecture is on 28th August in Bloemfontein.  

After Lunch I attended the Pecha Kucha session that students presented.  The themes were varied including creative spaces for Durban, homelessness in Australia and even contrasting spaces in Namibia. 

The last keynote of the day was by Rahul Tehrota and he showed us Mumbai and how the people live in the city and how festivals dominate this city.  'In buildings you don't need aircon everywhere,' stated Tehrota.

Review of UIA 2014 Durban - Day 1

It's been a day full of amazing insight, hearing from some fantastic speakers in the Architecture community.
They are all at UIA 2014 Durban, the International Union of Architects World Congress.

Here are some of the highlights from the opening ceremony and my first day at the event:

• 'Architecture is political' - Hilton Judin
• 'Architecture otherwhere enables us to disrupt' - Hilton Judin
• 'Architecture is cultural' - Hilton Judin
• 'Architecture is social' - Hilton Judin
• 'Architecture activates.' - Hilton Judin

The opening ceremony included a wonderful artistic dance piece all around Durban. 

The UIA President reminded us that 'Otherwhere is Africa.' 

The Durban Mayor welcomed the delegates and reminded everyone to visit Rivertown, Warwick Junction and the other Heritage sites in Durban. 

The Premier of KZN wanted slums removed and hoped that the architecture community would work with the government in this area. 

The Minister of Public Works posed some interesting questions: 'What role will architects play in global problems such as informal settlements? and 'What are we doing for the problem of homelessness?'   He reminded the audience that we need to create a build environment which is humane. 

Next I attended the Open Building Implementation Workshop.  They had some insightful speakers.

We heard how Open Building has the idea of distinct levels.  Users / Inhabitants may give input on the design.

We were reminded that some open spaces have withstood the test of time.  Places where Festivals or Morning Markets are held.  

I also explored the Exhibition Centre where there was much on offer including another area for talks and various exhibtors.  

There is also a wonderful Mini-Film Festival on the go within the conference.  The Architect Africa Film Festival 2014.  In collaboration with DIFF 2014.

• 9/11 Explosive Evidence

The festival runs from 4 August - 6 August at The Coast of Dreams Building - UIA 2014 Campus

Some of the highlights from his keynote included:

• 'I became an architect because I grew up in crappy housing.' 
• 'How do we get architects to make a difference in society?'
• 'How do we improve communities?'
• 'When you are working with communities you have to hustle.'
• 'You have to be incredibly creative.'
• 'Architects spend decades perfecting their techniques'

He shared his insight into a community project he worked on in Haiti:

• 'After 4 weeks nobody cares about a disaster i.e. the media.' 
• 'Good funding comes from Individuals and Corporations.'
• Children raised money for the funding of some of these projects.

He then shared insight about a community rebuild in Japan

• The story of 1000 Paper Cranes
• They asked for 1000 Paper Cranes from the community, a benefactor was willing to pay $1 for each crane, millions of cranes arrived, the benefactor agreed to pay $500 000. 
• A wonderful story on the power of social media.
